The Government decided that children living in the cities should be sent to live safer parts of the country. Many families made a real effort to welcome the evacuees into their homes. Children often had to share schools. The country children would attend in the morning and the city children in the afternoon. In Britain when the air raids began, people took cover in air-raid shelters. Sometimes schools were hit by bombs. Luckily this was mostly at night when there was nobody inside, but one school in Cat-ford was hit at lunchtime. Down in the underground, families grabbed space on the platforms. After the last train had gone for the night and the power was switched off, people would try to sleep even between the rails and on the escalators.
At the beginning of the war children were taken to the local school hall, where the gas masks were being issued.
The masks were made with separate eye holes and a red nose to try and make them appeal for children. And sergeant fleabag licked the field marshals hand and then wagged his tail.
Sergeant fleabag was a dog -Pomeranian -and an animal hero.
His owner was a soldier with the American troops who invaded France in June 1944. As they landed on the beach they were met with bombs and bulluts. Many of the soldiers were killed or wounded. The most appalling aspect of of the Nazi regime was the persecution and extermination of the Jews. Violent attack’s on Jews in Germany began in the 1930’s and were continued in all the countries the Germans occupied. Death camps were established for the sole purpose of eliminating the entire Jewish population. Altogether, nearly 6 Million Jews were murdered. Jewish families are herded by German guards onto cattle trucks for transportation to one of several European death camps. The holocaust was the World War II genocide of the European Jews. Between 1941 and 1945, across German-occupied Europe, Nazi Germany and its collaborators systematically murdered six million Jews, around two-thirds of Europe’s Jewish population. In 1933, the Jewish population of Europe stood at over nine million. Most European Jews lived in countries that Nazi Germany would occupy or influence during World War II. The Nazis considered Jews to be inferior race that posed the deadliest menace to the German Volk. In late 1941, Nazi officials opted to employ the additional method to kill Jews, by poisoning them with gas. The holocaust has a number of causes. It’s direct cause is the fact that the Nazis wanted to exterminate the Jews and that they were able to do so. But their lust for murder didn’t come out of nowhere. The antisemitic Nazi ideology must be considered in the broader context of age-old hostility towards Jews. After Hitler became Chancellor of Germany, The Nazi party immediately began passing anti~Jewish laws with the goal of removing Jews from Germany.

Gas masks were issued to all British civilians at the start of world war 2. They were given to people to protect them from smoke, bombs and other things. At the start of the war some citizens had not been issued to gas masks. Babies had special gas masks made for them which would only be issued if there is an emergency. In the lead-up to world war 2 there were fears that the Germans would attack the UK. Gas masks had been used a great deal in the the first war. The masks were made out of black rubber, which was hot and didn’t smell well. Many soldiers died or were injured by gas attacks that is why gas masks were really helpful. There were no warning that there would be a war so people would take there gas masks with them. Every adult and child in Britain were given a gas mask in 1939. That means that around 38 million masks were issued. People were fined if they were caught not holding gas masks. To warn people that there was a gas about, air raid wardens would go off. To tell people that the gas was clear they would ring a bell. Everyone in Britain was given gas masks in a cardboard box. Gas masks were 10 pence each. Dogs would wear gas masks. Almost 400 people were injured and 230 were killed. Gas masks were very important. John Haldance came up with the idea of making gas masks.

As soon as the Nazis come to power, Jews were expelled from government and university jobs. Jewish shops were attacked and Jews were bullied and humiliated in the streets. Many left. Others couldn’t afford to go or just hoped things would get better. But there future was bleak Germans were also taught to despise other racial groups such as the Slavs, Gypsies and Negroes. Gas masks were used to protect themselves from any gas attacks including bombs from aeroplanes from Germany. Gas masks were used everywhere and at every time of the day even while they sleep. Gas masks were used during 1939 - 1945. Gas masks have a filter which allows the good air to go in. Everyone in Britain was given a mask in a cardboard box, to protect them from gas bombs, which could be dropped during air raids. The gas masks were made of black rubber, which was very hot and smelly. It was difficult to breathe when wearing a gas mask. When you breathe the air was sucked into the filter to remove the gases then when you breathed out the whole mask was pushed away from your face to let the air out. Posters reminded people to carry gas masks all the time. People were fined if they were caught without a gas mask. Gas mask where used in Britain to protect themselves in case that Nazi German bombers would drop poison gas bombs.

Basic foodstuffs such as sugar, meat, fats, bacon and cheese were directly rationed by an allowance of coupons. Housewives had to register with particular retailers.

Most controversial was bread which was not rationed until after the war ended. The "national loaf" of wholemeal bread replaced the ordinary white variety to the distaste of most housewives who found it mushy, grey and easy to blame for digestion problems.[17] In May 1942, an order was passed that meals served in hotels and restaurants might not cost over five shillings per customer, might not be of more than three courses, and not more than one course might contain meat, fish or poultry. This was partly in response to increasing public concerns that "luxury" off-ration foodstuffs were being unfairly obtained by those who could afford to dine regularly in restaurants.[18]

Fish was not rationed, but prices increased considerably as the war progressed. The government initially did not ration fish, for fishermen at risk from enemy attack had to be paid a premium for their catch in order to fish at all, but prices were controlled from 1941.[19][page needed] Like other non-rationed items, fish was seldom available in abundance. Supplies dropped to 30 of pre-war and long queues built up at fishmongers and fish and chip shops. Wartime fish and chips was often felt to be below standard because of the low-quality fat available for frying.

Eggs were rationed and "allocated to ordinary consumers as available"; in 1944 thirty allocations of one egg each were made. Children and some invalids were allowed three a week; expectant mothers two on each allocation.

Arrangements were made for vegetarians so that other goods were substituted for their rations of meat.[31]

Milk was supplied at 3 imp pt (1.7 l) each week with priority for expectant mothers and children under 5; 3.5 imp pt (2.0 l) for those under 18; children unable to attend school 5 imp pt (2.8 l), certain invalids up to 14 imp pt (8.0 l). Each consumer received one tin of milk powder (equivalent to 8 imperial pints or 4.5 litres) every eight weeks.

For many years scientists knew that certain moods killed some bacteria. .However researchers needed to understand how to harness this antibacterial microbe and to manifafacture enough of the substance before they could make a useful medicine.people mostly died of typhoid trench foot and trench fever.
