The Battle of Midway began at 9:04 am on June 3rd, 1942 when an American reconnaissance plane sighted elements of the Japanese fleet 800km west from Midway. Japanese gunners fired upon this plane. The second contact was made at 9:25 am at 1,100km west of Midway when a pilot reported that they had located the body of the Japanese fleet.

Four American planes began a torpedo attack on Akagi at 7:00 am, followed by six other American planes. Most of these planes were shot down and none actually hit the Akagi. A cloud was covering some areas and so Nagumo believed that Japan would have the element of surprise if they struck now. Nagumo ordered all ready planes to have their torpedos replaced with bombs, but this was brought to a halt at 7:28 am when a scout reported seeing ten enemy ships. At 7:45 am he ordered that planes that had not had their torpedos replaced yet were to prepare to attack American naval units.

Admiral Yamaguchi ordered a hastily assembled attack force into the air from the Hiryu. The attack followed the Americans back to the Yorktown and around noon carried out a dive-bombing attack that badly damaged the ship. Work commenced to get the Yorktown moving again and at 2:30 pm the ship was underway. Another wave of Japanese planes from the Hiryu hit the Yorktown with a torpedo attack. This stopped it for a second time and orders were given to abandon ship.

Early on June 6, 1942, reapair crews were attempting to repair the Yorktown and Hammannn. They worked throughout the day to fight fires and stop flooding on these ships to bring them under control. They had made some progress, but at midday some lookouts spotted incoming torpedos. The Hammann sank within minutes of being hit. The Yorktown remained floating and the repair crew had planned to continue work the next day. Early June 7, 1942 the Yorktown ended up sinking.
