Ethos, Pathos, Logos examples in "Letter from Birmingham Jail" by Dayeton Tolle

Yesterday, we looked at ethos, pathos, logos in Dr. King's work "Letter from Birmingham Jail." Not only is his writing packed with heavy sentence, allusions, biblical references and language, he uses every trick in the book in persuading his reader to see his side. In the Padlet, work in your table groups to come up with the following:

1. One example of Ethos used in King's letter (cite your textual evidence, page number and line number)
2. One example of Pathos used in his letter (cite page number and line number)
3. One example of Logos used in King's letter (cite the textual evidence, page number and line number)

In "The Letter to Birmingham Jail," King uses an example of pathos on page 1208, line 124-129, where he uses very strong emotion from his own life. He states a very lengthy piece, quote, "But when you have seen the vicious mobs lynching your mothers and fathers at will and drown your sisters and brothers at whim; when you have seen hate-filled policemen curse, kick, and even kill your black brothers smothering in an airtight cage of poverty in the midst of an affluent society..."

In M.L.K. Jr.'s letter from Birmingham jail he states "When you have to concoct an answer for a five-year-old son who is asking: "Daddy, why do white people treat colored people so mean?"" It creates a sense of sadness and oppression that you can feel towards the little boy that is going to live in a constant oppression based on the color of his skin. That he won't be able to go as far or get the rights and chances that a white male would be able to get on any basic day of the week. That he will forever be judged and labeled as a black man. Then for when his time comes he will be labeled as an easier target to hit. The sadness that this will be the normal conversation that a father will have with his son or daughter. This is not correct is the statement of this quote.
