Primary research is a form of research that you have collected yourself.
A good example of primary research is a survey that you have personally
conducted.

Secondary research is research that has been collecting from an origin other than yourself. an example could be sales numbers from another company

In comparison, These two are very informative in different ways. Primary research provides an outlook into your initial idea whereas secondary evidence provides a more factual outlook i.e. Figures and data.

To say one is more important and more effective than the other in my opinion would be wrong, both Forms of evidence are very effective and informative in how they help and expand on ones ideas

1.3 Identify problems the companies may face when conducting research.

One problem that a company could face when conducting research is too many hypotheses to research in the allotted time space. This can be solved by conducted by combining certain hypotheses with each other to cut down time.

Another problem could be budgetary concerns. A form of research a company may want to undertake may not be possible due to the budget they have to perform said research, This means the company would need to find another way to research whatever it is within their budget.

A third issue could be not getting any response from interview requests. Not getting any responses for interview requests could mean that a large portion of your research is gone, To solve this issue a company could: Alter the way requests are written or delivered to a certain person, Find more contacts or switch to a larger platform of research i.e. a survey

To conclude, Out of these three issues I have provided I believe that budgetary concerns is the most important one to consider. I believe that in comparison to the other two this issue is more important as it would be a much more dire situation if there was a lack of budget whilst conducting research.

1.4 What are the benefits/purpose of research that companies carry out

There are a number of reasons why companies carry out research, One reason being to test the acceptance or popularity of their product. This form of research can help companies to see how successful their product will be popular and also what parts of the product customers/consumers like.

Another reason/benefit of research is to gauge the demand for the certain product in the market. If the research comes back that there is a low demand for the product in question then the company will know not to produce more of it.

When comparing these two benefits i would personally say that the main important reason for research is to test the acceptance of a product. I think this is crucial because if a company were to release an untested product they may end up with a product that is a complete failure, therefore testing the market would be essential when researching.

2.1 What makes a good researcher? rate yourself on each quality on a scale of 1-5

A certain quality of a good researcher is that they always keep an open mind aout things. A researcher will always be looking for things to look into and understand. rating: 3

A researcher will also be aware of what is happening around them, One way to do this is to frequently watch the news or to listen to the radio. This will help a researcher to understand their surroundings when researching a new field. This quality is extremely important compared to organisational skills as this will enable me to identify and acknowledge any factors I may or may not need to research in the future and gain a headstart on myself. Compared to organisation skills, this quality is much more important as I can identify possible research factors before I may need to whereas with organisational skills it will not help me with the actual job of research. rating:2

Another quality is that a researcher must be able to express his or her ideas when needed,A good way of doing this is to write down ideas that you have so that if you are asked to go into detail you are able to elaborate on your initial idea. One example of needing this quality is if after presenting your ideas you are asked some questions you need to be able to answer quickly and to the best of your ability and this quality would help as it would enable you to speak your ideas clearly. Rating:3

Another great quality I would need to portray is the ability to keep myself organised and my actual organisation skills. This would help a lot as it would mean that any time I could possibly be wasting can be cut down to a minimum because of my organisation skills.

Personally, I believe that improving my awareness would be the most paramount of the skills i have produced, A good researcher needs to always be aware of world matters and what is happening around them. Without knowing what is happening i feel that my research skills would not be as effective.
I also feel that in comparison with each other, my ability to keep and open mind and being able to express my ideas and beliefs is a lot more important than my ability to keep organised. I believe this because when it comes to researching and providing ,y research it would be more important to have the open mind and the ability to express my ideas as I would be able to deliver my findings in a more clear, concise way.

Another option i am going to be enquiring is asking students from my secondary school. This will require permission from the school so i will need to organise this with the school.

For my vox pops i will clearly need a camera to film them. I can sort this by acquiring one from college. For my crew i will be using my peers from my course. This will make things easier and more convenient for me and in return i will help them with their vox pops. Once again i will be making contact with close friends, family and possibly my old school for candidates for the vox pops.

The types of questions i will be asking are questions such as: Are you aware of what grime is?, Do you listen to grime?, If there was one on the market, would you buy a Grime based magazine?. I believe that thes answers will best provide the information i need in order to decide whether or not a Grime magazine would be well recieved by the general public.

My aim today was to complete a minimum of 10 questionnaires before the end of today, Unfortunately I was only able to carry out 7 of the 10 I wanted to which can create an inconvenience for me at a later date. To solve this issue I will attempt to get close friends and some relatives to complete the three questionnaires I had missing. Overall, I think today's lesson can be counted as a success as although I wasn't able to complete my desired number of questionnaires I was at least able to get some questionnaires complete.

Below is a copy of my magazine draft created via indesign

Grime music is a genre of music that had emerged in England in the late 90's and early 2000's. Some of the genres leading pioneers include lethal bible and skepta

The primary research I decided to use in order to collate information were Focus Groups and questionnaires. I decided against using vox pops as I felt that the information I would gather from these two mediums would be substantial evidence.

As I had determined, my two forms of primary evidence had provided a good amount of evidence and statistics in order to create an idea of my magazine name and cover. Although I had Collected enough evidence i feel like my confidence waivered when I thought about using vox pops.
One problem I had experienced while I was gathering my primary research was that I struggled to find people that were willing to carry out a short questionnaire. This posed as a large issue as this meant that I could have potentially lost a large portion of my research. Fortunately after persistency I was able to collate a sufficient number of responses to have a good idea of my demographic, Which I was able to identify as 16-20. Also from my primary research I discovered that the majority of people that had filled out my Questionnaire online were male, This discovery led me to decide to aim my magazine to a largely male audience.

The impact that these means of research had were extremely positive and helped me greatly when deciding my magazine.

The secondary research I decided to use were figures from the NRS and also a timeline showing the growth of grime and its artists. From my Research from the NRS I was able to learn that 20.6m adults read general weekly magazines across print and digital. I also learnt that this equalled to 40% of Adults in Great Britain aged 15+. This helped to conclude that a weekly magazine would be most effective.
The Grime information I used was also extremely helpful and informative as it helped show me the meteoric rise of the now popular music genre. This information showed me the popularity that this genre has accumulated during its existence, Knowing the fan base of some of the leading pioneers of the music such as Skepta (637k) and Wretch 32 (788k) I was able to fully understand and decide that this magazine would have a large consumer base.
One issue that I encountered while conducting research on the rise of popularity in grime was that I found it extremely difficult to find evidence of an artists fan base. This meant that I was at first unable to gauge an idea of the success of my magazine idea. In the end I decided that a reliable source of an artist fan base would be on social media I.e. Followers on twitter and other means of social networking websites. Although this did prove to be effective, I feel that its effectiveness can be questioned as not every fan of grime may have access to a social networking account thus possibly making my research inaccurate.

Throughout this unit I feel that I have honed and developed a lot of my skills, One of which being my communication skills.
Due to having to complete a set of questionnaires I have produced I was required to have to leave my comfort zone and talk and interact with people I do not know and would not usually go out of my way to talk to, I feel that this development has really helped me to boost my confidence and also boost my courage and willingness to communicate with what could possibly be a stranger.
Another skill I feel I have developed is my timekeeping and meeting deadlines., Working to a deadline called for me to plan my time accordingly. This form of timekeeping has also helped me greatly increase my organisation

From my data I can concur that my magazine has a demand and would also be successful if ever published and put out to market. I am able to understand this because from the survey I underwent I was able to see that 100% of participants were aware of the genre of grime and were also interested in the idea of a grime based magazine. Unfortunately my data and findings could certainly be questioned due to the small amount of participants I chose to undergo my survey. The amount of participants that took the survey were only 6 so I certainly feel that this is not enough to fully backup the idea of a grime magazine. I am well aware now that in the future I must bring in more participants in order to have cohesive evidence to support my findings

BARB- BARB stands for the Broadcasters' Audience Research Board and they are responsible for recording viewer ratings for television channels and shows. BARB is owned by companies BBC, channel 4, channel 5, Sky and the institute of practitioners in advertising. BARB supply viewer ratings in the UK only

RAJAR- RAJAR stands for Radio Joint Audience Research Limited and they are responsible for recording viewer ratings for radio. RAJAR are much like BARB but of course are solely aimed at radio whereas BARB are solely aimed at TV. RAJAR is owned by the BBC and the RadioCentre

OFCOM- OFCOM stands for the Office Of Communications and is responsible for 'regulation of TV and radio sectors, fixed line telecoms and mobiles, plus the airwaves over which wireless devices operate.' This means that they monitor what is aired on TV and decide whether or not it can be aired. This company is important as it regulates what is aired and when I.e. Watershed.

ASA- ASA stands for the Advertising Standards Authority and is responsible for reviewing any advertisements and deeming them suitable before they are put on air or on view to the general public. Much like OFCOM, the ASA decide whether or not things are aired or in this case put out to view.

All four of these companies are important because of what they do. For instance, if BARB was not there to show viewer ratings a to company may continue creating a show that no one is watching which will in turn damage the companies profits.
