Released in 1976 for $75 (around $300 today), the Coleco Telstar Arcade featured a unique triangular brown design and three controllers: a tennis dial, a gun for shooting games, and a steering wheel for racing. While the steering wheel was the standout feature, the lack of games designed for all three controllers led to its downfall. Despite selling over a million units, the system was discontinued in 1978, marking an important step in controller development but ultimately paving the way for more successful gaming consoles.

1986

In 1986, Sega released the Mark III (later Master System) to compete with Nintendo’s NES. Its controller was similar but used a rounded D-pad to avoid patent issues, and lacked the extra buttons of the NES controller. Despite being smaller, lighter, and having a longer cord, the Master System sold only 13 million units, far less than the NES, and was discontinued in 1992.
