         <title>Origin of Consciousness   (RF #1) </title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Purpose:<br><br>A new research conducted by the Tel Aviv University has identified and measured neural activity associated with a new <br>conscious experience. Even to this day,it is a mystery to the world of Neuroscience which areas of the brain take part in <br>making us conscious and experience the world from a subjective perspective. This intrigued me to choose this article as <br>the study has provided a rare glimpse into human consciousness. <br><br>Concepts:<br><br>Conscious experience is private and inaccessible to observers. Thus, it is mostly studied through subjective reports of <br>experiences or indirect measures of brain activity such as EEG and f MRI. However, the significance of this study is that <br>the researchers have surgically implanted electrodes in the brains of patients with epilepsy to determine precise areas <br>of the brain responsible for their seizures.  Then the patients were monitored for weeks by means of brain activity <br>recorded by the implanted electrodes. The significance of these electrodes are that they record activities of individual <br>neurons in their vicinity. The research talks about "Binocular Rivalry" in which the brain cannot combine two different <br>images shown to each eye. The researchers have also found that the subjects reported a change in perception two seconds <br>after change in frontal lobe neuron activity and one second after medial temporal lobe neuron activity. Page 152 of <br>chapter five in our textbook talks about a similar concept. It mentions that individuals deprived of binocular vision have <br>trouble perceiving depth.<br><br>Assumptions:<br><br>I barely had any assumptions about human consciousness as it has always been a mystery concept to me. My perception on <br>consciousness were mainly spiritual and I viewed consciousness as something cosmic and something that came from divine. <br>However, this study has slightly changed my view on consciousness from purely spiritual to something physical such as <br>electrical impulses in neurons influenced by change in perception.<br><br>Implications:<br><br>The positive implications of this study is that it has incorporated medical feats to gain access to minute individual <br>neuron activity. The study has helped us gain an idea of how conscious precepts are formed and helped researchers find <br>ways to provide clinical care by alleviating severe epilepsy in patients. <br><br>Questions:<br>Even though this study is a brand new feat in the field of neuroscience, it has left so many questions unanswered about <br>human consciousness. Even though the study talks about consciousness and visual perception, consciousness through other senses are unexplained.
