This is a realistic fiction about an 11-year-old boy Alex Petroski's journey to launch his iPod into space and to find answers to his questions about identity, responsibility, friendship and meaning of life. The fact of living in a family with a long-dead father, a troubled mother and a barely-around brother facilitated Alex's prematurity and particular perspective to life. When his best friend Benji suffered his parents' divorce, Alex naturally guided him to look on the bright side and started a new life in a metaphorical way. In Chapter 3, when Benji asked Alex did he feel bad about not having a dad, Alex said no because it was like not having a dinosaur. Things you never had doesn't have strong influence on you. It also showed the importance of animal pet's company to children in hard time.

Keywords: Boy, Divorce, Incomplete family, Pet influence

This modern fantasy talked about the summer when a 10-year-old girl Willa started fresh with her mom in a country town after her parents' divorce and the common secret shared with her new friend, an old lady neighbor Hazel. Their secret was about the fantasy world of Nutfolks, a kind of pixies that only enlightened people could perceive. Hazel, Nutfolks and other things happened in that summer helped Willa go through the agony of her parents' divorce and accept her new life. Besides Willa's family situation, her friend Vincent also suffered from an incomplete family without mother but with a alcoholic and irritated father.

Keywords: Girl, Understanding of Divorce, Acceptance of Changes, Companion/Peer's influence

It leads in the topic divorce in a more creative way by using Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s broken marriage as an example to show children that the fairytale happy ending is not always the same case in real life. Instead of focusing on children’s emotions, it makes clear explanations on many terms regarding divorce, like custody, and it also offers some advice of solutions to different problems children might run into. What I really like about the latter one is its integrated media of pictures, including drawing and photography.

Key words: Explanations, Solutions

A picture book about remarriage and new family. It tells us about a story of how two brothers from a divorced family live with their father and how they accept their mom’s new family. It is a book that is appropriate to the age range from 4 to 8. With neat and amusing illustrations, the author addressed children’s concern of remarriage, relocation and blended family and their possible reactions to those situations in a realistic way. It is not only a picture book for children to understand what divorce will bring us and how we are going to deal with it, but also a book for parents regardless what marriage situation they are in to see their marriage and family relationship through children’s perspective. Mutual understanding between children and their parents is the goal of this book.

Keywords: Boys, Divorce, Acceptance to New Family

FRED STAYS WITH ME--Nancy Coffelt

It talked about how a girl went through her suffering from her parents’ divorce with the company of her dog, Fred. Conflicts between the little girl and her parents showed in this book could not be realer. The reason I regard it as high quality picture book is that it involved the relationship between people and animal pet, and it demonstrated the positive influence an animal pet could bring to children who were in pain of parents’ divorce. Besides, its illustration tone of a warm and smoothing yellow is wisely chosen to make audience read the story with a peaceful mind.

Keywords: Girl, Divorce, Pet influence

Why do I choose this topic?

During my practicum in Idylwild Elementary School, I had a very random conversation with the students in my 4th grade class, which surprised me a lot and raised my concern on the topic divorce. A lot of them told me their parents were either divorced or separated. Some even started to compare the number of their parents' new companions. Their easy attitude toward such a tough topic made me wonder why American children can deal with parents' divorce more easily than Chinese children, who helped them and how did they succeed?
Thus,I started with children literature related to divorce, separation and incomplete family. Doing research on divorce refreshed my cognitive to students' diversity. It reminded that the realm of students' diversity should not be confined to what are mentioned in the textbook, such as language, race, poverty and so on. Family situation or parents' influence also ought to be included.
The selection I made has 6 books in total, including 2 picture books, 2 informational books, 1 realistic fiction and 1 modern fantasy. Each of them talks about divorce to different extent and with diverse emphases.
