I have taught many Common Sense Media lessons with grades 5 though 8 this year. My favorite is the Nearpod lesson entitled Picture Perfect. In this lesson, students could see that photoshop can enhance a person's looks so they appear flawless. This puts pressure on girls and boys, making them feel they are never beautiful enough, thin enough, muscular enough. I added to this lesson by having a discussion as to what they could do as 5th and 6th graders to put their best foot forward everyday. Emphasis was placed on personal hygiene, exercise, diet, and sleep. We also discussed the importance of being beautiful within, which is manifested through kindness and respectful behaviors.
