I read this in high school, and it absolutely wrecked me. I have specific memories of reading about Ethan's plight and feeling both maddened and empathetic to his feelings. It was one of the first books that made me realize how messy love and responsibility can be.

Again, another novel I read in AP English in high school, and I have taught several times to 12th graders. It's both fun and scary - we often think of the situations in this book as "what-if" but then realize it's a "some of this is happening." The book feels mature, but I think it's important for young people to see themselves as citizens in a shifting political world.

I saw the first movie before I ever knew what these books were, but I was hooked. I loved following Frodo on his journey and seeing this new world that was full of both good and evil. Later on, I grew to appreciate Samwise as the epitome of what a true friend is.

This a recent book I read as an adult, and I love this author and her characters. It's magical and believable, usually with a good twist. I loved sharing new books like this with my students for independent reading.

I read a lot of Stephen King and Dean Koontz early on since my brother devoured them and my mom could pick them up for next to nothing at yard sales. Odd Thomas was a character that stuck with me though. His adventures were both heartbreaking, hopeful, and comedic at times.
