I agree with the author that the close reading text can be scaffold by a less complex text to build background knowledge, which will set up the students to be more successful with a more complex text.
Assumption: There are bi limitation to what can be done to improve students reading comprehension skills when we expose them to close reading of a variety of text as long as there is scaffolding with simpler text. Also, close reading provide an opportunity to provide deeper knowledge of a concept, skill or theme in a text,.
I would argue that students' conversations require much monitoring about the text as they tend to diverge into other topics not relevant to the text at hand, especially at the primary level.

It is going well for most of us. However, switching between the teachers of the intensive groups poses a bit of time constraints due to transition time. The conclusion is, to rotate the two more intensive groups twice per week, focusing on cvc or blends and digraphs with short vowel patterns. The less intensive groups stay with the same teachers for the week, focusing on r-controlled vowels and vowel teams.
