Exploring astronomy has brought together a lot of what I've always been interested in: being out under the stars, building (see telescope post), reading maps, science.

Hopefully it will be done by March, 2022. I'm building the wooden parts and buying many of the components (mirror, focuser, aluminum struts, eyepieces). Also, I'm just following other people's plans- I don't have the math or engineering background to pull this off on my own!

In December I took my kids to their first rock concert- at the Fillmore in SF to see Beach Bunny. Very cool!

Teaching

I teach first year writing courses as a continuing lecturer at UC Berkeley. I've been teaching here for 11 years and before that taught academic writing and ESL courses at Golden Gate University. And before that French classes, but that is another story...

My academic focuses are: second language writing; academic writing; applied linguistics; multimodal writing for metacognition; eportfolios, and equitable grading practices.

I mostly teach the two classes in UC Berkeley's R&C sequence, CWR1A and CWR4B. When there is space in the schedule (and a budget for it), I also teach CW105- Digital Writing and Developing your Voice and CW9C Academic Writing for International Students

I live in Oakland with my wife and two kids- one in 9th grade and one in 11th grade. I love being a dad; when we have time my family likes to play music together, play cards, and travel.

Music has always been a big part of my life and I come from a line of musicians. I've mostly played guitar and drums (my first college degree was a BA in classical guitar performance from CSU Fullerton). I still love playing classical guitar music- baroque music from Bach or 19th century Spanish guitar music, for example. I also really enjoy learning Brazilian music- bossa novas, sambas, forró...
