I played hockey at club level until I moved to the US. I loved it despite breaking my nose, fracturing my cheek, losing a bunch of teeth (for which my parents often remind me of the cost), every finger on my left hand, and finally both my ankles, one of which is now mostly metal. On reflection, maybe I should have given up earlier. I now run as often as I can and play the much safer game of Wordle.

I'm not immune to Olympics fever and love watching basically anything on. Some of the sports are quite curious - which makes it all that more intriguing to think about HOW anyone started competing in them! I rode horses until I was about 15, and I'm not coordinated enough to do much else! I love baseball - specifically Red Sox baseball - and travel to games including Spring Training in Fort Myers most years! My father and brothers were very competitive tennis players, and I cringe at the thought of it because I was so bad despite never ending lessons.

Being from California, swimming has always been a part of my life. From diving through waves in the Pacific Ocean as a kid to competing on swim teams from age 5 through high school. One of the high school records from a relay team I anchored still stands, even after many, many, many years! While I don't get out and swim laps as much as I should anymore, I'm just a water baby at heart as I love to spend my weekends at the beach and could watch waves break for hours.

I played ice hockey in school and on rec teams up until a few years ago, although my knees tell me it feels like just yesterday that I was last on the ice. I have a lot of great memories of playing in the net, and plan on getting my skates repaired soon to see if I've still got it, or at least pass the love of hockey onto my son. Until then, the most competitive "sport" I'm doing is the Wordle group text I have with my wife's family. Much less dangerous than hockey, but just as much trash talking.

Got into skating out of peer pressure. Went for a couple of inter-school competitions. Always ended up getting consolation prizes or just special mentions. haha! Tried ice skating once, broke my thumb. That was it for me.

Rugby was the main sport I played at my school, although I always preferred football (soccer). The sport didn't like me much, howver, as I seemed to keep getting injured. I tore cartilege in my knee resulting in an operation, broke my left collarbone, disclocated my right shoulder, and probably spent as much time on the sidelines as I did playing. Since leaving school I stuck with soccer and it's much kinder on my body, and also I am a keen cyclist. When I lived in London many seemed to think that was more risky than rugby but I seemed to avoid serious injury despite a few crashes. Now I live in a more rural setting and like to swim, run and still cycle a lot.

Tennis has always been the go-to sport and has certainly kept me sane throughout the pandemic, serving as a COVID-friendly activity since March 2020. One of my fondest memories is when my best friend and fellow team captain (also named Katie) and I played doubles together our senior year of high school and had an absolute blast as "Katie Squared." That's us in the picture with our coach. We most definitely did not take our team to State or anything like that, but it was a great way to end our Varsity tennis careers.

Skiing is my absolute favorite sport and winter activity! Growing up in New England, my parents are both big skiers and got me on my first pair of skis when I was 2 years old. It's always been a big part of my life, but I never skiied competitively - the creativity and freedom of it is what I love most! Just this past week I've been up in the mountains for a few ski trips with family and friends - Killington in Vermont and Sunday River in Maine are two of my favorite mountains in this area. They say it's a lifetime sport, so I hope I have many decades on the slopes ahead of me!

I didn't really get my ski legs until I moved to CA and spent weekends in Tahoe. My husband covered all things skiing when he worked for ESPN X-Games and also NBC during the Salt Lake and Torino games. We lived in Jackson, WY for a bit before moving back east to "settle down." We are taking the boys on their first big western ski trip to Snowmass/Aspen in two weeks and can't wait.

...yeah, winter sports were non-negotiable. Everyone in my part of Vermont learned to ski at Cochran's so seeing Ryan Cochran-Siegel win a medal yesterday was amazing. In the summer my mom would drop us off at the tennis club for swim team in the morning and tennis team in the afternoon (I assume there was some adult keeping an eye on us? Maybe, or maybe not!). She promised me that some day I would thank her for it and of course, she was right. Fun fact - summer swim team was outside and there were a few times in early June when we arrived to practice to find a thin layer of ice on the pool. Good times. EDIT to add photo of high school tennis team... I must have been somewhere between 15-18 here but I look about 12 (and so blonde...).

The sport that's had the biggest impact on me is basketball. I do view it as the ultimate team sport. Being from North Texas, Dirk Nowitzki is a local hero, and he's also a world champion. He exemplifies so many incredible leadership traits, even in retirement, such as humbleness, confidence and true grit. I continue to be inspired by his character, and am consistently amazed at how sports can transcend and impact the human spirit, no matter one's background. And now it's time to go walk the dog before catching up on the U.S. Olympics team later tonight!
