The fact that the war was deemed as being "over" with the surrender of Lee's troops on April 9th, and then Lincoln is assassinated only 6 days later is significant. Most of those in the north might have been hopeful for the war to be over and to get back to life again. However, the killing of Lincoln (who was viewed as "the great emancipator") left everyone in the north thinking: "what's going to happen now?".

Lincoln acted as a beacon of hope for his country, and he was killed before the entire country got wind of the end of the war. He was unable to act out his plan for a unified country going forward, which only complicated Reconstruction and unification efforts. The Republican party was on edge and political tensions grew as well. -Anna Hill

The complexity of the dates shows that even though Lee surrender at Appomattox Courthouse less than a week later President Lincoln was assassinated due to divide still left in the country as well as the other confederate forces that were not ready to surrender. This would affect reconstruction because the leader of the winning side who likely had a plan is now dead and every one else now has to figure out what they are going to do and what their new plan is. - Reggie

The assassination of President Lincoln would have a great affect on reconstruction and its progress because just as they formed a plan and reached a surrender not even a week beforehand, their leader was killed and someone new was brought in. This would lead to greater problems such as a different perspective from a new leader, and uprise from citizens due to a newly formed plan that would affect them economically, and even heavier socially. This is because the North and South did not agree on many issues, making agreement and negotiations difficult to reach socially. - Abigail B.

The death of Lincoln will impact Reconstruction later because many of the policies that were planned to benefit the newly freed Black citizens and prevent a large rise in racist violence in the South, were instead replaced by lenient policies that didn't offer much protection and allowed for racial violence even in the laws and policies of the South. -Maizie
