Obviously, this is doable as it currently stands, however, this would help our entire community by giving more one on one instructional time to students. With only a 45 minute class period, actual student studio work time comes out to being only about 30-35 minutes. It would be great for each kid to have at least one full minute of one on one feedback.

Emily

Wow! This is a tough question. There are so many different areas to consider. I think that academics are definitely important, but there should be more emphasis on a students' social and emotional well-being. When I think about the teachers who I loved and still remember today, I do not always remember specific things that they taught me, but how they treated me, encouraged me, and cared about me.

SMALL CLASS SIZE. We can achieve all of our goals with a reasonable teacher:student ratio. I can really get to know all of my students and meet their needs with a reduced class size. This is hands down the number one thing I would do if I could create my own school. Second, I'd allow more flexibility in teacher's schedules and more time for play. Kids have too much stress and anxiety and lack social skills because we have taken away their ability to learn them and put too much pressure on them . They don't get nearly enough opportunities to learn how to interact with other and learn social norms. 4th graders are writing essays that I would have never been expected to write until junior high, if that. Kindergarteners are expected to sit through a 6.5 hour day with only two 15 minute recess breaks. The societal effects are detrimental, imho.
