What?

We made an exhibition that represents our theme, which was “Cultural Identity”. We used a big wooden board to connect all of our own art pieces together using pins and strings. Each individual piece represents each of our individual cultures and future-careers; therefore, each piece has different styles, meanings, and work into it. The way we expressed our own cultural identity is all different and very unique to ourselves. The map and the question in the center of the board, which ties all of our artworks together, represents that our identity is being impacted by our culture and where we come from.

How?

We used different medias, such as clay, watercolour, and pencil, that could be best used for our own project. We first started with our own individual piece, which was all different as each of us had different careers and cultures. Then, we brought all the pieces together into one board. During this process, we had to discuss a lot and have meetings in order to work together as a team.

Why?

Because it is unique how we are all from different countries and have different goals. The purpose of this project was to represent how our culture and career affect our identity; therefore, we are all unique individuals with different personalities and dreams.

I'm created one multi layered painting on plexiglass with acrylic paint. The painting is an experience based on perspective. The painting is based on Garden song by Phoebe Bridgers. The echoing chords, synths and violin in the song make the listener feel disconnected which is how I hope to make my viewer feel with the small brush strokes and dark background. I included references to the settings of the song in the different panels.

This building of our final project represent a world filled with color, with some people living darker perspectives, still holding onto hope despite the countless challenges that they have to face. But adding the ceramic fish, we are showing the fish “eating hope” and taking it away., which also plays a huge role and it a inevitable aspect of our modern day world and society. The people are still holding on to their hopeful world.

The characters are a bit ugly and fluid which I enjoyed in a lot of characters so I wanted to try working with lines but getting the hang of being able to draw more fluid shapes and learn to look at a reference and see the different shapes and lines present.

My intention for this project was to develop a senses grid that demonstrates my impressions of the UAE. The swirls, watermelons, distorted bricks, and contrasting colors all attempt to demonstrate my feelings towards the UAE. I am extremely happy with this project as I was able to demonstrate how I feel, hear, see, touch, and taste of the UAE. My research taught me pastel techniques and gave me multitudes of inspiration to take form as I developed my final piece. This research ultimately aided me in brainstorming different compositions and practicing using pastel. I utilized the skills that I learned through research and media testing to aid me in developing my final piece and accomplishing my intention.

My overall idea came down to me wondering what it would be like to use album covers as a tool to show time passing and the changes in a person's beliefs and psyche. It explores the ideas of political instability, abuse of power, societal pressure and a myriad of other things. Music and by extension album art is a way to express oneself, to not have to hide behind a façade. I created these pieces as I wanted to explore a unique art form, that of album art. I wanted to better understand its importance and if it can create an emotion or thought without music being present. This series of work is about album covers and because of this I felt open to discuss my love for both art, music, and their crafts. I focused on using different fonts, art styles based on certain music genres, different brushes, colors and more so that each piece truly felt separate. Each choice tries to connect to the feelings of people and musical genre(s) of that point in time.

https://sites.google.com/asdubai.org/maxchoweverettscdiportfolio/grade-11/core-design-innovation-i-art/digital-art [explanation for each piece]

This painting was made with acrylic paint and white gel pen on mix media paper.
I designed the concept for this character over my time in the CDI painting module. I wanted to paint something with strong contrasting colors and and fine details to emphasize the boldness of the character. This piece was inspired by the composition of tarot cards and how they display one or more characters to represent a concept or idea. I also took a bit of inspiration from Greek/Roman mythology to design this character, I thought she might be a warrior or protector for the sun god known as Helios. In paintings he is often depicted with his golden chariot or other big sun inspired paraphernalia. So I wanted to convert that idea into the sun that she is shielding behind her.

I decided on this because I underwent the spinal fusion surgery and have metal rods in my back and I am not a very big fan of them. However, in this piece I wanted to show my imperfections and insecurities with the message of self love given by the flowers. The flowers were inspired by BTS, Map of the Soul: 7 ~ The Journey ~ album cover, which contains the song that inspired me to make this piece.

My name is Reyaan Punj I am in grade 9. I took my final four photos after countless attempts. I explored all the skills and anges on the photography module, because I thought that I would be able to do my best work and have the best work produced. My inspiration came from another student because when I was looking at the exemplars I saw from the student Ariana Sanchez because in her pictures she takes a picture of a girl looking into a mirror and someone blowing and the after someone receiving the water and the girl is grown up and looking into the mirror. I am going to do something similar but with the angles and from the front and from the back. I used my phone to take all the pictures in different environments and focus on various themes. I used adobe lightroom to edit all my photos. I used everything in my power to make the pictures look aesthetic. When I took my first few shots there were many things I wanted to change and do differently, so I did some research and moved one step at a time while using the makers creation cycle for reference.

I wanted to convey a process through film, so I decided to make a grilled cheese sandwich. My video was too long so I had to take a shorter screen recording. Through making this I was able to learn my new editing skills as well as filming skills through this project. I experimented with different angles and motions, and I practiced using color overlays and exposure settings as well as other editing techniques.

I based my personal project on what it's like to be an ASD student, my theme was "A Day In The Life Of An ASD Student." I decided to take photos of each part of a school day including, but not limited to waking up, breakfast, getting to school, each class, lunch, and WIN. I took one photo of the scene and one was a portrait since that's my favorite photography style. This is the waking up portrait photo, it's my favorite because I used the rule of 3rds and I really like the lighting. I liked the background color too since it falls under the simple background rule of photography. I had a lot of fun exploring different ways to take photos!

I made a personal project that was basically inspired by bees. The color in the background is supposed to show how cheerful life is with bees. But without them, the world would fall apart. They are such an important part of our survival so the eyes are looking down at the bee as if admiring it. I integrated the paintbrush tool for several parts, blurred the photos, added text, and blended the background together.

At first we were stressed out at the many tools provided on photoshop. The large amount of different tools that were at our disposal had confused us. We were then approached with an option to create a new logo for the school to put on merchandise they would sell. We decided to take in this idea as it felt like a nice way to get involved with something we had never done before. We would also be working together, which we have done before in the past and success came with it. Through the process, we began with researching already made professional logos and then taking in colours that worked well together and thematically matched with the school. With that, we then sketched out some ideas and picked out our favourites. To create our logos, we used adobe illustrator and managed to create two final logos after continuously revising and refining. In the end we found most success in our first design, and also completed a second one just in the nick of time.

There isn't that much meaning in this project; in fact, there isn't any decided storyline on this as well. However, I thought that making a video like this would be a fun way to show the skills I've learned. I used a lot of filming, lighting, and editing techniques that I've learned during my film classes.

The materials I use consisted of wire in wood the actual base was made out of wood but the tree was all made out of 2 colors of wire. I focused on the elements of perspective and view. For the next few classes, I did research looking into lighting, props, backgrounds, and more. Then, on June 2nd, I acquired all of my props - the different colored foods, backgrounds, e.t.c. Finally, on June 3rd, I took my photos considering the rules of composition/lighting, although they were hit-or-miss. In the end, I only liked the photos I took with the red background. So, finally, I edited them, making some touch-ups in lightroom. Overall, I would say I'm happy with the end product!

My personal project is a clay owl with a human mask/face on it. I used an oval shaped base to make the body, and a pinch pot type technique for the head. I cut out feathers for the wings and head. I made this to relate to my previous projects with human birds, and my love of owls. It doesn't have a specific meaning, I just like it and it fits the owl theme of my art this year.

The vase relates to me culturally and historically. In addition, my inspiration of Ancient Greek and Roman history is also a major aspect I hope to show through my art work. In addition this piece allows me to show my newly learnt skills of throwing clay as well as hand made work combined (hand refining) . Something which I will add to make the work unique will be a mix of glazes as well as flower petals. I either want to fire the piece with organic materials stuck to it, or add a resin incarcerated flower, after the firing process. My work ended up being unsymmetrical which I originally wasn't very happy about. But now I have learned that sometimes it's better to let go and to be content with what I have, which is a very important lesson to learn especially at the end of the year.

I chose to draw the face of the most popular athlete in the world, although he’s retired, Michael Jordan is not only known for his incredible athleticism playing in the NBA but also for playing in MLB as well as starring in the original Space Jam. The reason I decided to paint him was that he is the best basketball player to ever live and I chose to Make him unrecognizable by removing some important features of his face because since Everyone recognizes celebrities when they’re out and they can’t have privacy, some of the celebs wish people didn’t recognize them in public so I decided to make him unrecognizable. I can’t find the original photo but I saw an ad on Instagram which was a painting of a Face that was unrecognizable and had the idea to mix that with someone who is famous. And for that, I chose Michael Jordan. Also, I decided to use gouache since I feel like the outcome would be way nicer. I drew lines on his face to furthermore make him unrecognizable. I chose to paint one side of his face darker than the other side because this was the side where the light didn't hit his face. I decided to paint the lower part of his body red to symbolize the basketball franchise he played for which is the Chicago Bulls. Finally I painted the background in a beige/brownish color to highlight the bright colors that were used in the making of unrecognizable Jordan.

My work reflects the connection my mama and I have to the hamsa hand. I aim to convey one specific message to the viewers (my mama). The way I will do this is by using different colors (cool colors such as blue, purple, green etc) and creating different shades between the two stamps. Also conveying this message through texture on some prints. My artist style is intimate and realistic as I will print with colors that correspond to another and reflect well on of another. Making the art piece peaceful to look at and easy on the eye. This will make viewers attracted to the piece of art and want to continue looking at it. My aim is for viewers to feel a sense of warmth and comfort once they view my print - which would convey the same message as the evil eye on the hand of the hamsa.

My inspiration for this piece was the idea of masks and how our idea of what a mask is has changed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. I wanted to communicate that masks aren't just a piece of fabric we wear to avoid getting sick, they are beautiful and intricate pieces of art. I created this piece as I wanted to explore different types of masks. It allowed me to realise how covid has truly warped our perceptions of what a mask is. An obstacle that I overcame was time. After a run in with covid and a respiratory infection, I was not able to experiment with other forms of sculpture such as plaster and wire. This means that I had to go straight into my project with little time to experiment with other media forms. The cardboard with paper mache is easy to paint which means that I could add color and my own creative twist on things.

For this piece, I was inspired by my newfound love for surfing. I learned to surf a couple of weeks ago and it's been one of my favorite activities. I'm trying to communicate with the audience how great surfing is and how personal it can be, by creating a personal board design. I also made the background blue watercolor, to mimic the ocean, which is also a very large part of my love for surfing. I've love the beach since I was little so I wanted to add that in somehow as well. I used contrast a lot in this piece, by using two different types of paint and pen. I used acrylic for the surfboard and watercolor for the background to show contrast between them, as well as pen to make the board pop out more. I created this piece so I could add my own personal spin on something quite common that I love. By making the board design an evil eye, which is a big part of my culture, I was able to create something that represents my love for surfing and my culture. I also added measurements to make it even more of a board design, especially because the measurements are those of my personal board.

My work reflects my love for my country and my ethnicity in a way that aims to show the unique, interesting culture which allows every person to have a different diverse identity. My artistic style is abstract but very intriguing in that I purposefully try to bring my audience into the history of Egypt in different way and in that way create a feeling that art does not necessarily need to link to a certain era and that it is free and full of creativity. To create this feeling I use the reductive print method which subtracts pieces of linoleum through carving and uses several colors such as different complementary vibrant colors which allows my art to stand out more. It also allows my art piece to look lively and fun. My work is consists of different types of lines from sharp to curved and will be full of texture. My aim is to profoundly touch my audience in a way that emotionally connects them with my art matter through a range of emotions from being appreciative to being educated for the history we understand and learn about now. Ultimately I wish for people to be more knowledgeable about history throughout many different ethnicities and cultures.
