I wanted to do a an art project about something that is semi personal since I used to struggle with this. So I drew a cartoon of a person in the brain kind of as a symbol of a mediator. He has dope in front of him and he’s answering the phone and the body is requesting dopamine immediately but the mediator is too high. Next to the mediator is a jar of blocked dopamine transporters. Dopamine is essential! Don’t do dope kids.

In this picture I'm trying to demonstrate that drinking alcohol during pregnancy can immensely affect the fetus in a negative way, creating results that will last a life time and go as far as even impairing some of the child's abilities. Like, mental retardation, heart defects, motor problems, and even physical abnormalities. I chose this concept because I felt it is something that could have effected any of us already, or potentially effect our children in the future, and it's very important that we're informed about the effects of this substance (alcohol) for pregnant mothers, so that we can also inform others about the risks.

(p.124 of the textbook)

Something that caught my attention has stuck with me is Chapter 4 and development of the brain and it's four stages. I never really grasped the importance of the development of the brain inside the womb until this chapter. I always assumed that the most important phase was after birth, which still is, but didn't realize that in the womb it was just as important. The fact that the brain of the child is already at 1000 grams and the full grown brain is 1200 grams. This shows just how important the development in the womb is.

The art project I picked is lateralization which is the division of labor between the two hemispheres of the brain. You have a left hemisphere and a right hemisphere. I didn’t know what both hemispheres do and what their jobs were. Like the left hemispheres is responsible for writing, reading, speech, language, math, logic, and giving positive emotion. The right hemispheres is responsible for art, creativity, geometry, imagination, and giving negative emotion. I got the information from the book page 424-432. I always thought the brain was one and it just had different sections not divided into two hemispheres.

One thing I will remember from this project is now I know where the negative emotions comes from in the right hemispheres and why I feel depressed sometimes. It helps me to think about my life, what can I do to improve myself and think about the reality of the world how it’s not fair out there.

I chose to do my art project on the nerve impulse. I chose this because I found it to be the most challenging concept and topic so far in the classroom, and I would like to understand it better. This has to do with the nerve impulse. There is a resting potential, this is when messages form in the neuron from the resting potential being disturbed. When the membrane is at rest it has an electrical gradient, this is how polarization happens. The difference between the electrical potential and voltage inside and outside the neuron is the resting potential. Some chemicals can pass through easier than others like oxygen, carbon dioxide and water. The channels they use are always open. Sodium and potassium which are pictured in my artwork cross through channels that are sometimes opened or closed. When the membrane is at rest sodium and potassium have closed channels. This prevents sodium from passing and very little potassium to pass. The sodium potassium pump moves sodium out and potassium in. The sodium is more concentrated outside of the membrane due to the pump. The permeability of the membrane prevents them from being able to enter. The slow leak of the potassium into the membrane brings positive charge with them and increases the electrical gradient. Potassium is more concentrated in the membrane, the electrical gradient caused this and the concentration gradient caused it to flow out whereas the almost no sodium can pass without the sodium-potassium pump when at rest. This information came from pages 26-28 of the book

My absolute favorite topics in this course have been directly from the recorded lectures. I especially loved the Chapter 3 lecture about the Limbic System which involved information regarding the amygdala. I found it funny that most people think emotions come from the medulla oblongata especially because of the reference from The Waterboy. A fact that has stuck with me and which made a lot of sense to me was the topic regarding how men fall in love versus how women fall in love. It is stated that individuals fall in love regarding oxytocin release; however men and women do not release oxytocin in the same way. Women release oxytocin with uterine contracts which is experienced through child birth or good sex. Men experience an oxytocin release through touch and over time. I am definitely a "left brain" person, as I am very logical and very black and white; therefore, it is hard for me to express myself through creativity. However, I tried my best. The below picture depicts how men fall in love versus women through oxytocin also known as the "cuddle hormone". Thank you Professor for your very interesting, informational lectures. Information regarding the Limbic System and the amygdala can be found in Chapter 3 on pages 74-76. I would like to remind myself of this information, as I feel this is a big question most of my friends ask. It is good to remember that women and men are very different and we do process emotions differently. I feel this is a good piece of life information that may help in the future.

I can recall having some knowledge on this, “division of labor,” yet I never understood how it aligned with my own skills. As a kid, I could hear a song on the radio and almost instantly remember the lyrics, but understanding musical notes was much more difficult for me than some of my peers. In my eyes, I was frustrated as I was able to retain information from most of my math classes, yet geometry really took me in for a loop. Similarly, I was considered proficient in writing, yet creative writing took twice the effort and dedication. I wanted to really hone in on this principle to remember once this course is finished, as I really think I can use this information as a course guide in college to see what classes I will most likely succeed in.

I wanted to remember that writing down an illogical thought, or thoughts, will help turn my negative emotions into positive ones. I want to remember this because I have trouble expressing myself. I usually just bottle it up and try to throw it out of my mind. I want to remember what I learned in the lecture. It was really helpful to learn that journaling is actually an effective way of dealing with things. I found a journal that I was given as a child when I would visit the school counselor during my mom's divorce. It was a little sad to open it and only see my name written inside. I guess little me handled pain the same way adult me does, bottle it up or take it out on the basketball court. I never knew the part of the brain that deals with things like logic and writing, would also be responsible for positive emotions. I am glad I learned that, so that I can apply this information to my life, and maybe actually write something in that journal after 20 years.

I choose the lateralization from Chapter 13. The information that is presented in the picture is from pages 424- 432. The principles I am trying to represent in my art project are what the Left and Right hemispheres do. I choose these particular principles is because my sister has a brain condition called Chiari Malformation. A condition in which the brain tissue extends into your spinal canal. It occurs when part of the skull is abnormally small or misshapen, pressing on the brain and forcing it down. Some the symptoms she goes through is muscle weakness, problems with coordination, overactive reflexes, decreased sensation to touch, and she can't remember the day before very clearly. I can't help but notice how some of the principals that are mention are being affected in her day to day life.

The reason I chose to make my project on Epigenetics is because I find it interesting how gene expression works. The way Histones and Epigenetic tags can determine which genes are switched on or off shows the complexity of the body's cellular mechanisms. Also I find it rather important to keep in mind that decisions made early on in your life can affect how healthy your offspring can be.

Document the page or pages of the textbook that you are taking the information from.
Pages 107-108, Module 4.1: Genetics and Evolution of Behavior and Chapter 4 lecture notes.

What you plan to remember about this information that you have portrayed in your artwork after this class is over.
The main thing I plan to remember from my Art Project of Epigenetics is to be sure to watch my decisions in life. It is best to make healthy decisions regarding your Diet, Activities you choose to do in your free time, and whatever life choices are made. Eventually those choices will come around and affect your offspring.

Lateralization refers to left–right structural or functional differences, Structural differences may be present between the left and right sides of the body or the brain. In my art project I jot down some of the things that occur on the left side of the brain which is the logical concepts like math , calculation , writing and reading and on the right side I jotted down creativity, music , art etc most of the things that occur in the right hemisphere of the brain.

The principle I am focusing on is how nutrition can affect our mood. unhealthy eating patterns can cause mood swings. Blood sugar fluctuations and nutritional imbalances are often to blame. Without a steady source of fuel from the foods we eat, our mind and bodies don't function well. Eating a healthy, balanced diet such as the Mediterranean diet and avoiding inflammation-producing foods may be protective against depression.

I chose to create my project around lateralization. Lateralization is the division of labor between two hemispheres. The brain consists of the left hemisphere and the right hemisphere and each one has its respective functions.

The left hemisphere correlates with language, logic, reading, writing, and math. In addition, the left hemisphere is associated with positive emotions.

The right hemisphere is responsible for storytelling, imagination, spatial awareness, art, creativity, geometry, and facial recognition. It also is the hemisphere that handles negative emotions.

I initially did not understand what people meant by being "left or right-brained". I understand now that when people consider themselves as artistic over good with numbers, they are labeling themselves as right-brained, and vice versa.
