This quote uses vivid imagery of melting flesh to appeal to the reader's sense of disgust. The intense physical description shocks the reader by throughly describing a human body dying on the war front. Remarque indirectly characterizes Paul as loyal by portraying his relationship with his comrade, Kemmerich. Paul takes care of him when the orderlies treat him like trash, and Remarque illustrates this level of caring by saying that Paul sits tensely and watches his every movement. This displays the fact that Paul will always be with his friends and will never lead their side. Remarque succeeds in bringing the reader along with the characters by not only describing the physical setting, but more importantly the scent, temperature, and conversational environment of the characters. In this passage the tone is both fearful and tense, as the soldiers are getting ready for to fend themselves from the bombardment. Although Kat tries to distract everyone with a little joke about shells's explosion looking like fireworks, everyone is very serious and on guard. The recruits in particular are portrayed as fearful about the situation, since this is their first time dealing with a bombardment in war. The author uses two similes here to describe Tjaden's hunger, and the large amount that he usually eats. It gives the image of a kid as skinny as a grasshopper sitting down to eat who ends up eating so much that when he stands up afterwards his stomach bigger than a pregnant bug. Even though they haven’t known each other for that long they are very interconnected just from the experiences of the war. This quotes shows the hardship of war and what the soldiers had to witness. This quotation highlights the atmosphere of nationalism in Europe at the time. The boys felt pressured into volunteering for the army because everyone expected them to, even their parents. If they didn’t join, they would be called names and ostracized, the extent of this shown in that even their parents would call them cowards for not enlisting. The author gives the reader a deep description of what the characters are seeing in a peaceful setting before they enter a more harsh setting such as war. With the descriptions of how the sky looked set the readers into the realization of how pretty and peaceful the time can be. While not expecting the worst could come. This quote uses imagery to describe certain details about where he is and what it looks like but also the mood he is feeling while seeing all of these things. He leaves the reveal of where he is till the very end, highlighting grim and very visual details about the fact that he is in a graveyard with a dead body. Remarque including this helps show how tiring the day of battle was. Tjaden's reaction shows that he was heavily fatigued and by the addition of the number it helps set up the shock of there only being 80 people left alive. The quote expresses the use of characterization for Paul and Kat as it shows their true feelings towards war. Paul is helpful and generous as even though the recruit was shelled and was mortally wounded with his hip busted, bursting with blood, Paul still thought about giving him rum and tea to aid him even though he is fully aware that the recruit probably wont make it out alive. The author paints a weary and depressing scene for the audience. At this point the author is describing how soldiers felt after being attacked. The war later on has a major affect on all and changes their perspective and maturity levels. This is a theme in All Quiet on the Western Front because it shows the underlying tone of Remarque not trying to show an adventure or journey, but how grueling and horrible war is. This quote uses the metaphor of a flame to represent the soldiers and the war as a storm. The comparison shows the vulnerability of the soldiers amidst the destructive forces of war, and the constant struggle they face to survive. The metaphor also suggests that, like a flame, the soldiers may flicker or even be at risk of being extinguished, symbolizing the dangers and uncertainties of war.

The Imagery is of the silver landscape , how it becomes ghostly and how the screams of the horses made the scenery seem that way. Remarque uses imagery to describe how the suffering animals cause everything to look ghastly and lifeless.

The author uses this quote to portray how Himmelstoss was being beaten by narrator and Tjaden. Himmelstoss was wrapped in a white cover repeatedly being beaten by both participants. This quote shows personification of the things happening around them. Implying that the last sighs of dying people still remain in the air is if he he can hear them dying. The author says the rockets are singing as if the sounds of rockets are like songs of shells. This helps me understand how Paul is taking in the events around him

With all the deaths due to the war, Remarque displays that the doctors or very used to the deaths, and based off the tone the doctors completely brush their deaths off as if they aren’t even human.
