The creation of an island community gardent has the potential to safely enhance islanders lives as we move into the “new normal”. By utilising the diverse skill sets and inherent knowledge of this small island community, it is envisioned that this community garden will promote social health, community cohesion and intergenerational learning. It will also provide numerous health benefits, such as: improved access to food, improved nutrition, increased physical activity and improved mental health. 

It is envisioned that the local community might use this space not only as a place to work and grow foods but as a place of learning for all ages. A communal seating area will also be constructed to facilitate meetings, workshops, traditional music sessions etc. A space where we can also eat homegrown organic produce, outdoors and safely. There is no shop on Sherkin Island, all food has to be brought across from the mainland. This project would give local people the opportunity to work together and grow much of their own food, organically. It would also provide a much needed space for community members of all generations, a place where we can safely get together and create something positive.
