Regardless of the many challenges we have in life/class you are in control. Sometimes you need to refuel, get GPS assistance, or phone a friend for directions. Ultimately you have the choice to be positive and take control.

To create positive change, we have to believe our efforts are making a difference. Just as we model and teach the growth mindset to our classes, we have to remember that we do make a difference everyday! Don't forget to celebrate success and improvement!
Luke L.

I had two takeaways from Rule #1 and how it relates to the classroom. First, I could relate to the part about positivity. I believe we need to be positive and confident in what we are teaching. The students will react better to lessons and feel more confident in a classroom that has positive energy. Second, the knowing where your bus is going relates to making sure you have a plan. You should have a clear plan for each unit and each lesson taught.

-L.Lee

This is a mindset. For students and teachers, we need to embrace that sometimes there are things that we cannot control. We just need to deal with our flat tires as they come but control what we can, our attitude in the moment. It can be easy to see the negative in a bad situation but difficult and necessary to envision the direction we want to go in order to find the positive in every moment. If we believe that we are out of control, giving up is just as effective as trying because it doesn't matter what we do. Conversely, believing we are in control makes us responsible for the outcomes of our decisions. This works is both for students and teachers.

-Flo

Believing I am the driver of my bus will positively impact my classroom because it will give me ownership in what I am doing. What happens in my classroom is a direct reflection of who I am as a professional. I AM THE ONE creating the lesson plans, I AM THE ONE creating the learning environment, I AM THE ONE believing that what I am doing is best for the kids in my classroom. Knowing that what I am doing is the right thing to do is a very calming feeling. Knowing that it is OK to change things if I find they are not working is calming to me. Knowing I have the support of my leader and colleagues is calming. This calming effect will follow me in my classroom and hopefully affect my students’ learning. without being "mean".

Lost my keys, I can't drive the bus:-). Adding some humor.
We are talking about Grit in class and I relate that directly to being the driver of your bus. When stress, problems, or difficulties
come knocking at the door; use it to open the door of opportunity. Spielberg, Einstein, Rowling, Steph Curry, Steve Jobs, Walt Disney, Dr. Suess....they all drove their big bus of success after being told they couldn't. Granted they have a fully loaded bus currently, but I'll keep driving my school bus full of children wanting to learn.

The classroom and life is in full control of the driver. The driver is YOU! I look at Marty in the section and take that he "turned it all around when the desire and vision changed." I have a desire this year so far to change the atmosphere of my classroom and the attitude of myself. I go in each day just pumped to teach. I know the kids dont see it, but I feel it. I'm excited from the first time I teach it to the third time I teach it throughout the day. I think I will keep that desire going by being creative and positive throughout the year. I want to keep driving my bus and drop the students off at the next stop.

Kaplan

Being the driver of your own bus to me means that you have to provide the energy. Sometimes as teachers we can get frustrated by students being tired, or disruptive, or having a poor attitude. In reality, if we, as teachers, remember to provide our own energy, it is much more likely for the students to follow suit. We are in charge. If we can remind ourselves to provide our own energy and be the driver of our own bus, then the students will likely feed off of our energy and have a much more positive experience in our classrooms. If, however, there is a student who is having a bad day, remaining the driver of your bus will help you from getting pulled into the negativity that can result from allowing others to control your bus.

Hansen
