means that you understand that your own way of life is just one of many. You are aware of other ways of life. You can observe and compare your way of life to another in admiration and without judgement. This is due to your understanding of the circumstances of the other, and you accept that your way of life may be similar if subjected to the same circumstances.

We are all global citizens. As we mature, we are told and learn that we are Canadian, Brazilian, Spanish, Chinese, or German. While this may be true, we are first citizens of planet earth. As a population, we would more fully realize this if another life form were to visit earth. It would unify us all, don't you think?

Schools can prepare students for global citizenship by staying in touch with current global events. For example, in biology, this might mean the teacher emphasizes the Ebola outbreak in Sierra Leone while studying viruses and brings the humanity into the unit rather than just the technical side of the outbreak. Ecology projects are also easily designed to have students study other parts of the world.

Our school is an International school with students from all over the world and so there are regular opportunities to directly ask our international students to share their thoughts on a topic. Everyone in class benefits from this because it broadens our world view, and introduces a different perspective. The teacher benefits too!

Students love true stories. Throughout history there have been several global events (epidemics) that have affected several countries. Not only is the epidemic itself in need of study, but so is the response from less affected countries to the epidemic. Study the people who were in a position to help, and did.

In one of our senior biology courses, we have done a Biome Project where students research the common flora and fauna of the region. Students choose locations from all over the planet. Part of their presentations must summarize any organizations that are set up to conserve the ecosystem that they are studying. They must study the work of the people that are taking action to protect the ecosystem that they have chosen to study.
