The symbol of darkness can be seen in The Scarlet Letter through the character of Chillingworth. His name in itself symbolizes the cold-heart and low compassion he has towards the people. He represents a character that desires nothing but evil and revenge. Dimmesdale stands at the scaffold at midnight by himself and he screams loudly to the feeling inside of him. this is the darkest time of the night where he releases his sin.

Darkness scares people and puts them in a bad place. In the case of "The Scarlet Letter" Hester's letter and Dimmesdale's guilt represent darkness. These things are holding down the characters and it takes a toll on them. "More Light, Please" talks about how in the first reaction in darkness is to reach for a light switch and turn on the light. This is what Hester and Dimmesdale do to lift the darkness that is holding her down. Roger Chillingworth connects himself to the dark studies of alchemy. Alchemy is connected to darkness and such that Chillingworth is connected to darkness also.
"As if there were a withering spell in the sad letter, her beauty, her warmth and the richness of her womanhood, departed like fading sunshine; and a gray shadow seemed  to fall acriss her." (Hawthorne 174)
As Hester takes the Scarlet Letter off, she is overflooded with sunshine, but when she puts it back on, it's as if the scarlet letter is a dark shadow blocking the sun from shining on her body.
