White, E’s (2017) Uni Voiceover Documentary is an epitome of an Expository mode documentary. It features a first person perspective of a typical day of a student, with a voiceover provided by the filmmaker herself. Nicholls, B (2010) provides the notion that an audience member will “attest to the resounding appeal of the voice of the filmmaker”, alluding to the idea that this voice-over style is one which an audience member greatly enjoys, I feel it gives it a personal touch and makes us warm more to the filmmaker and feel a lot more involved, like White is taking us on a journey through her eyes. The sound effects present throughout this video also add to the personal style of the documentary, for instance with the sound of crunching crisps, little is left to the imagination but in a positive way, I believe it makes us feel a lot more immersed in her world. White also applies the “Ken Burns effect” in which she adds movement to the still images. This is an asset to her piece as it once more takes us on a journey with her, especially in her panning of the stairs as if we are going up the stairs with her. Salford Mysteries (Bennett, 2017) successfully builds tension and peaks the curiosity of the audience. This piece combines the expository and poetic mode (Nichols 2010, p.167), as there is a narrator speaking clearly and concisely in a “voice of god commentary” (Nichols, 2010, p,167), giving detailed information whilst never revealing their face. It could be argued that the poetic mode is also used as the narrator also “emphasizes visual associations, tonal or rhythmic qualities (and) descriptive passages” (Nichols, 2010, p. 31) using voice inflections on dramatic adjectives such as “deeper” and “darker” which sets a fun but mysterious tone to the piece. Another element that is an addition to this tone of mystery is the choice of the soundtrack, which is an eerie score with no vocals. All of the imagery is depicted in black and white which automatically makes the audience feel like there’s something within the visuals that is yet to be revealed, piquing their interest and encouraging them to engage with the piece, in the hope that the secrets will be revealed by the end.

I'm delighted to announce that we have acclaimed documentary filmmaker Roger Appleton joining us this friday for a masterclass in navigating your way through documentary film making through independent means, and via existing broadcasters. He will discuss pitching, funding, logistics, tips and tricks and whatever else you would like!

With over twenty years experience, Roger will discuss the production process of his new feature doc about John Lennon 'Looking for Lennon' and also his career at the BBC and much more besides.

Please could you read his profile and post questions for Roger to the Padlet ahead of the session on Friday.

Please be punctual to the session. Roger's masterclass and Q and A will take up the first 1.5 hrs of the session.

The rest of the session on Friday will be spent discussing your preparations for the Assessment the following Friday 3rd Nov.
