B.) Xunantunich
Pronounced (Mayan pronunciation: [ʃunanˈtunitʃ] or Yunan Tunict). Thousands of years ago, the Maya empire stretched from Mexico in the north down to El Salvador in the south. They built enormous stone cities in the middle of the jungle, only to abandon them around the year 900 AD for reasons still unknown to modern archeologists. One of the largest Maya cities ever built, now called Xunantunich, was lost for centuries until it was discovered by accident when a villager in Belize came across a ghost of an ancient Maya maiden in the 1890s. Despite more than a century of ongoing work, Xunantunich continues to yield up new treasures. In 2016, an archeological expedition was digging through the floor of the main temple when they discovered the largest royal Maya tomb ever found. Inside were the remains of a noble accompanied by the bones of an animal, perhaps a deer or jaguar, as well as several obsidian weapons and other objects. But what excited archeologists was the discovery of a series of tablets inscribed with hieroglyphics that revealed the secret history of the Snake Dynasty that once ruled the region, including the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Tikal that now lies just across the border in Guatemala.

Tropical Climate
Belize is a small country that is located in Central America that occupies the south-east of the Yucatan Peninsula. In the tropical climate Belize experiences hot and rainy seasons from June to October, and cooler season from November to February. From February to April due to the decrease in rainfall Belize will experience some type of dry period, and that is the driest period of the year. Before the rainy season starts Belize experiences a heat increase and that occurs from March to May. Once May hits there will be more and more thunderstorms, and that is when the rainy season will begin.

A.) British Honduras
There are two possible answers to this. The first, one of the more logical origin stories, was probably derived from the earliest records of the settlement found in a journal dated back to 1677 belonging to a Dominican priest named Fray Jose Delgado, as noted in Alan Twigg’s book, Understanding Belize: A Historical Guide. Since the Mayans were the first settlers of the country, it is believed that the name was provided by the priest’s translator and originated from the Mayan word “Balix,” which means “muddy waters,” referring to the Belize River, or from another derivation of the Mayan word “Belikin,” meaning “land facing the sea,” referring to the coast — both of which were names of popular settlements of the ancient Mayas.

Another possibility, noted in the Encyclopedia Britannica, is that the name was assigned by the Scottish buccaneer Captain Peter Wallace, who was credited in the 1827 Almanack with discovering the mouth of the Belize River. He used the river as a place of retreat and began a settlement around Belize River ca. 1638. The story goes that Wallace, or his followers, gave his own name to Belize, but since the Spaniards could not pronounce “w,” it was substituted with a “v,” creating “Vallis,” which was changed to “b,” thus resulting in “Balise”.
