  • Hair structure: 3 major key components
  • The cuticle is the outmost layer of the hair. Protects the cortex layer and contributes up to 20% of the overall strength of the hair. 
    • The cortex is the middle layer majority of of strength and elasticity. If it’s healthy it contributes 80% of the hairs strength. It contains melanin the hair’s natural hair color. 
    • The medulla is the innermost layer. Is sometimes absent and does not play a role in the hair coloring process.

  • Level system- system colorists use to determine the lightness or darkness of a hair color. 
  • 1-10 1 being darkest and 10 the lightest. 
  • 1-natural black,2-natural dark brown, 3-natural medium brown, 4-natural light brown, 5- natural lightest brown, 6-natural dark blonde, 7- natural medium blonde, 8-natural light blonde, 9- natural very light blonde, 10- natural lightest blonde.

  • Oxidative are demi and permanent.

  • Temporary- fun colors that wash out with shampoo and neutralizes yellow
  • Semi- introduces clients to colors adds subtle results tones pre-lightened hair
  • Demi- blends gray, enhances natural color, tones pre-lightened, refreshes faded color, filler in color correction.
