3 Important Things I learned

The first important thing that I learned is that it is recommended that videos for students be 6 minutes or under (Brame, 2015). While this isn't an extremely hard time to follow, it is recommended because after this mark students often lose focus. This is important for me to keep in mind, being an ELA teacher because sometimes articles or book that we have read to us on YouTube are much longer in length than 6 minutes and it can be very clear that students have lost interest.
The second important thing that I learned this week is that videos don't need to be full of fancy edits to be high quality videos ( 6 STEPS TO PLANNING AND CREATING ENGAGING INSTRUCTIONAL VIDEOS). It can be a great instructional video with little extra "flashy" edits added. I learned that it is important to only add what is needed to help your viewer understand the content.
The last thing that I have learned throughout this week is that videos should be created with a conversational tone (Brame, 2015). This is something that I originally wouldn't have thought mattered very much. However, it is important that viewers feel involved with what is being explained in the video, rather than just being spoken at through a screen.

I do not do much work with videos, so my personal access to video creation tools is pretty limited. Personally, I have access to a phone with a camera and a speaker. I also have access to my laptop that has a camera and speaker as well. I also have iMovie on my computer, which aids in the editing process.

My school has a few more resources that are available to teachers. First, we can check out a video camera from the library. Another video creation tool that we have is PowToon. This is an online resource that you can use for free, however my district has a subscription to create longer videos.

After doing some research, I wish that I had access to a video creation tool that would capture what I am doing on my computer screen to create a video. Since I teach ELA it can be helpful for students to see how I make a text the first time I read it, or even how I go about doing informational research for a paper. By having access to a tool that would allow me to capture what I am doing on my screen while also talking to my students would be extremely beneficial.

An overview may need to be provided in our Informational Unit on text features. Most students should have some sort of experience with text features, however we do ask a lot more of students than in previous grades.

This video would first introduce why text features are included in texts and what types of texts students will be looking at. Then, each text feature will be highlighted in an article and defined for students. Lastly, students would see different text features and determine which feature is being displayed, while the answer is shown a few seconds after the text feature for students to check their thinking.

Given the current circumstances that we are in, I would plan to utilize this video through our online learning platform. This could help students at home gain access to the material, while still being able to practice.
However, if this were a normal school year, I would post this instructional video to Google Classroom and allow students to walk through the video at their own pace. While students are watching the video, they would be expected to be taking notes over all the text features.
