Following Hitler’s unsuccessful beer hall putsch, an attempted coup d'état by the NSDAP in Munich, Hitler was found guilty of treason and sentenced to 5 years imprisonment. The story made it to the frontpage and catapulted Hitler to the national stage, attention he capitalized on when he wrote his book Mein Kampf during his jail time, of which he would only serve 9 months. This book, released on 18 July 1925, laid out Hitler’s worldview, beliefs, and plan for the future of Germany, with it becoming a bestseller following Hitler’s rise to power in 1933.

The Nuremberg Laws, enacted on 15 September 1938, were a series of German laws created by the NSDAP at the annual Nuremberg rally which were racist and anti-semitic in nature and discriminated against Germany's Jewish and Minority communities. The laws legally restricted any form of relationship between Jews and the non-Jewish German people, known as the Protection of German Blood and German Honour, as well as set the criteria for Reich citizenship to be only those of German descent or ethnicity, known as the Reich Citizenship Law.

Kristalnacht was a violent pogrom, a riot aimed at expelling a specific group of people, that occurred on 9–10 November 1938, in which the general populace as well as the Sturmabteilung paramilitary group of the NSDAP committed wide scale violence against the nation’s Jewish communities with intentionally little interference by authorities. The event followed the assassination of German diplomat Ernst vom Rath by 17-year-old German-born Polish Jew Herschel Grynszpan in Paris on 9 November 1938, which was used as the pretext and justification for the event.

Auschwitz began operating following its construction on 20 May 1940, on the recommendation of SS-Obersturmbannführer Rudolf Höss of the camps inspectorate and approval by Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler. The site, much like the other concentration camps established in Germany following the rise of Hitler in 1933, was created as a destination for the thousands who were deemed enemies of the state by the NSDAP, such as political dissidents and minorities.

The Invasion of Poland by Germany in the fall of 1939 saw the sending of thousands of refugees to the capital city of Warsaw to escape from the Polish-German front, including a large number of Jews. Due to this, Germany began constructing walls that cordoned off a large section of the city as a ghetto to imprison and contain the Warsaw jewish population, with the announcement of the ghetto coming on 16 October 1940.
