In Appendix (401-424) Advertising/ Research methods, goes over many advertising and research methods, it highlights how these techniques can be applied in sociological studies. Reading this made me wonder about the studies and surveys being conducted in my area, and the research being used. We use research in society in order to benefit us, and help us make decisions. However while we research we have to take into consideration if the information we are taking in is reliable.

In this challenge he outlines the fundamental steps in conducting sociological research, in which includes formulating research questions. Henslin emphasizes the importance of understanding the social context and the impact of research in our society. Research can help our society with many things for instance things such as health decisions. Not only this being on social media has taught me that the internet has an overwhelming amount of information out there claiming to research and steering society or individuals to make poor decisions or just spend money on products to ¨help them¨ however in reality there is no research on how this product can benefit you. I feel I have gone through this especially when it comes to things such as hair care products. I have curly hair, over the years it has been just a challenge to find what products work for me. I have learned from this research is crucial to find what benefits you, and what is reliable vs what is not.

It highlights the stigma associated with having a criminial record (Devah Pager, pages 63-72). Reading this had reminded me of an older brother that I have, he has previously gotten into some trouble with the law a couple of times leaving him to struggle to find a job, due to this I have seen my brother give up and not have any motivation to even bother for trying to get a decent job.

¨The Presentation of the Self in Everyday Life¨

This chapter goes over the concepts of self presentation and how individuals manage their identities in social interactions. In pages 135-146, Goffman delves into the idea of ¨performance¨ in everyday life, suggesting that social interactions resemble theatrical performances where individuals play specific roles depending on the context. He emphasizes how individuals use various strategies such as impression management to influence how they are perceived by others. I feel I am able to connect that I do cheer, when I put on my uniform I am presenting myself as someone who is trying to life the crowds spirits and get them engaged as to what is going on, and getting them motivated to watch the game. I feel cheer has made me more energetic and happy, however I am not like that all the time. Something that I have observed as well is my father for instance. He presents himself one way at work as someone who is professional, knowledgeable, and protective. However when he is at home he is more relaxed and playful.

This chapter examines the experiences of individuals who work with deceased bodies, such as morticians, medical examiners, and other professions in the death care industry. Pages 249-264 focus on the stigma associated with this line of work and how these individuals navigate societal perceptions and how they feel towards the idea of death. Thompson discusses the emotional and pyschological challenges faced by these workers challenges faced by these workers, including fear of being judged or viewed negatively by others due to their profession. Although my experience with death is limited, it takes a certain individual to work with the deceased, someone has to care for them and still treat them with respect even though they are deceased. I understand why someone would be reluctant to mention their profession that others might think it´s gross to work with someone who is deceased or they may be asked a lot of questions and they may not want to talk about their work.

Chapter 5 Shopping/ Social Order Meyer, If Hiltler Asked You...

Meyer uses the hypothetical question, ¨If Hitler asked you to...¨ to highlight the chilling reality of how ordinary people can become complicit in atrocities when they are faced with authoritative demands. It delves into the psychological mechanisms that allow individuals to rationalize their behavior. This made me think about how individuals tend to rationalize their decisions. They make excuses for their bad behavior. Ordinary people when grouped together with other people who have similar beliefs, will even tend to rationalize their decisions. Though I can´t understand how they can rationalize being extremely cruel or violent to another human being no matter the rationale. I am Catholic and when I am with people who are also Catholic volunteering it makes it enjoyable to be together and doing something good for others. Though the opposite seems hard to understand, but I guess the rationalization and community could make it easier for them to do something cruel.

This chapter discusses how shopping is not just a transactional activity but also a mean of fostering a sense of belonging and identity among individuals. The author discusses how individuals will engage in shopping as a way to express their social affiliations and to connect with others who share similar interest or values. This had me reflect on how when I shop it show´s a particular style that I like, I have noticed I tend to dress similar to my friends we all share similar interest in music and clothes. I have a very clothes friend that I have known for over 9 years, many people have told us we start to look more and more similar over the years due to the clothing we wear.

This text focuses on the challenges faced by low wage workers in the United States. Ehrenreich highlights the struggles of making ends meet, the black of benefits and the exhausting nature of work service. There is surely a physical and emotional toll that these jobs take on individuals. I feel low wage jobs should not be a way to make ends meet. I think of it as more as a way of getting work experience, or working part time while going to school. Knowing that you can´t make a living off low wage jobs, or if you do it´s because you work multiple jobs and have a partner who you end up making ends meet. At the end of the day it should be a way for those to focus their energy on getting higher wage jobs. Those low paying jobs definitely have a physical and emotional component, but should be a drive to do something with different benefits etc, this is how I attempt to plan my future.

This discusses the experience of working in a fast food environment, it delves into the interactions between both customers and employees. It highlights the dynamics of service work. There are many challenges and rewards of working in such a setting including the fast paced nature of the job, and the necessity for teamwork. I don´t yet have any work experience with working, but I could imagine working in a fast food environment challenging. It is fast paced, and you are required to get the food out as fast as possible while at the same time making it quality and the way a customer wants it. It definitely requires teamwork and similar to having an assembly line. Depending on the fast food service you may be waiting on someone else to do their portion for you to start or finish your part. Working as a team would be fun, a close environment and getting to work together at times that are stressful.

This explores the generational divide and the complexities of navigating different age groups. I noticed that it also reflects on the experiences of individuals who find themselves in a transitional phase. Not only this it discusses themes such as identity, and feeling a sense of belonging, and the challenges of communication across age boundaries. In regards to different age groups I have noticed I talk in a particular way when I am with my friend who are the same age as me rather than adults, where there is a difference, we talk differently due to different experiences we had. When we were younger shapes who we are and gives us a sense of identity and belonging. The way we were raised and the music that we listen to and what was available during the time things such as cell phones, etc it all plays a role on how it shaped adults of different ages. It is easier talking to peers of the same age because we share the same experiences, and technology and challenges.

Corporate ideologies

From this I have learned how corporate culture and ideologies shape the behaviors, values, and practices within organizations. Ideologies influence decision making, employee engagement, and overall environment within a company. Ideologies plays a huge role on how a company functions, and makes decisions. Their ideology will influence who will work there and how much employees will engage depends on the ideology and culture of the company. For instance I am religious/ Catholic I couldn´t ever work for a place that supports things such as abortion, it goes against what I believe. There are others though where that is not against their beliefs and wouldn´t have an issue with that. One Ideology might have more ethical considerations that influence their decision regarding environmental impact or social responsibility, or employee treatment. For example Patagonia is a company known to it´s commitment to environmentalism. It prioritizes using recycled materials, reducing waste, and supporting environmental causes through initiatives like 1% for the planet where they donate 1% of sales to environmental organizations. They also promote a flexible work culture of work life balancing and provide flexibility with their schedules.

¨Fight for $15¨ movement discussed on page 79 focuses on the campaign advocating for a $15 minimum wage for workers particularly in the fast food industry. There are many struggles of low wage workers who seek fair compensation for their labor, there are many challenges they face in making ends meet on current minimum wages. Personally I think the more we keep raising minimum wage it causes issues for those who have gone to school to a degree and have a specific career in a specific field. They do not get increases at the same levels minimum wage workers get. It also causes food and services to be more expensive, and then there is tipping on top of it, where do we draw the line? Why is it the expectation that a minimum wage job is the bar to making a living? In my opinion those are temporary jobs for teenagers and those in colleges trying to get a career. There are trade schools and other fields that pay high than minimum wage jobs. These days depending where you live it is hard to make a living even making more than minimum wage. When we increase minimum wage it increases the costs of services and food costs.
