Her early life

Mother Teresa was born on 26 August.

Her name was: Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu.

Youngest of three chiildren.

The Family was Roman Catholic and very religious.

In 1924 Agnes and her older sister Age started going

to a secondary school near their home.

In 1928 Agnes decided that she wanted to become a nun.

She wanted to be a missionary in India.

When she left her family, it was the last time she saw Age and her mother.

Her dad is already dead, and she meet her Brother Lazar again in 1960

1 December, 1928 - 6 January, 1929

That is when she went on a long journey to India in a ship.

First, she becomes a novice.

Then she must wait in years before she can become a nun.

On 23 May, 1929 Agnes became a novice. Every novice

chooses a new name for herself.

Agnes choose Teresa, after Saint Teresa of Lisieux in France.

Saint Teresa had taught that you can serve God by doing the simplest jobs gladly.

Saint Teresa called this her "Little way".

Agnes (now Sister Teresa) was sent to the Loreto convent

in Darjeeling.

It's a poor area.

She worked hard both at the school and the hospital.

On 24 May, 1931 she went back to Calcutta to teach in the school at Entally., a poor part of the city.

Sister Teresa taught history and geography, she was a good teacher.

On 24 May, 1937 Sister Teresa could from now of not have any Moneys or prossessions of her own.

She couldt not get married and she had to obey the Laws of the Roman Catholic Church and the pope.

She became the headteacher of Saint Mary's School at Entally.

Violence and change

Sister Teresa lived and worked for almost twenty years in the Loreto Convent in Calcutta.

In 1930s Mahatma Gandhi was working hard to help the poor people of his coutry in a non-violent way.

But then World war 2 bagan and Calcutta was bombed by the japanese.

In 1943 five million people died.

The Work begins

Sister Teresa wanted to start a school in Motijhil . It is one of the worst slums in Calcutta.

She found a small hut with a courtyard and she started her school. Ther were no tables, no chairs, no pens and no paper.

In 1949 a man called Michael Gomes lent her the second floor of his house. Her adress was - 14 Greek Lane.

Michael and hes Family helped Teresa a lot.

In 1952 there were 28 Missionary Sisters of Charity living at Mr. Gomes's house. The second floor were very crowded. They needed a new house, but they had very Little Money.

Father Henry and Father Van Exem helped Mother Teresa to look for a bigger house.

Life at the Motherhouse

The day Begins very early at the Motherhouse.

A bell rings at 4:40 in the morning. The sisters get up and go to the chapel.

The sisters pray for half an hour.

Then they have breakfast After that they get ready for the day.´

If possible they go out into the city.

They take with them a bottle of water in their bags. They never take food or drinks from anyone.

At noon the sisters come back to the Motherhouse. They have lunch and wash up

Missionary Brothers of Charity

In 1963 Mother Teresa welcomed the first brothers to the Missionaries of Charity.

Like the sisters, they come from all over the world.

Brother Andrew was the first. He had been a Jesuits priest he left the Jesuits to help Mother Teresa.

In 1975 there were a hundred and seventy-five brothers at Work in ten houses in India and two in South Vietnam.
