The Pope was the perfect figure to get a bunch of people to go attack a country because religion is the best tool for manipulation. He promised that everyone who died in battle for Jerusalem would gain immediate forgiveness for their sins and he promised serfs that if they made it out alive they would be freed from their masters. So obviously all of sinful Europe and most of the serfs immediately packed their bags to Jerusalem hoping to be forgiven for spreading their legs a little too wide.

The Muslim Turks fought with the Byzantines and won in 1071 taking over their land in Asia Minor. The Byzantine emperor asked Pope Urban II to help him gain that land back. In 1095 the pope called for a crusade hoping that the Orthodox Church would reunite with the Catholic Church like two lovers from a very bad gay romance but that, for better or for worse, didn't happen because the Crusades sucked.
