For example, the narrator describes that Esperanza told Miguel that he was “the housekeeper’s son and she was the ranch owner’s daughter and between them ran a deep river. Esperanza stood on one side and Miguel stood on the other and the river could never be crossed” (Munoz-Ryan 17).
This shows that Esperanza did not think about how her comments made Miguel feel. She told him this because she feels that he is not worthy of her. In fact, this interaction shows that Miguel is not even worthy of Esperanza being sensitive to his feelings. She says something that is clearly hurtful and doesn’t think about how it affects him.

This shows that Tio Luis knows what he wants and as soon as the time is right he gets what he wants without being reasonable.

Another example is," You will regret your decision, Romona. You must keep in mind that this house and those grapes are on my property. I can make things very difficult for you. Very difficult."(Pg. 32 Munoz)
This shows that Tio Luis wants Romona to be his wife after his brothers death. He wants her because she is a lovable person that everybody likes and he could gain power with her. Tio Luis wants everything for himself and he just cares about himself.

This shows that tio Luis is untrustworthy because with her not choosing to marry her he burns her house down and that's not fair . This also shows that he is intimidating her so she won't really have a choice . This also proves that tio Luis is being unfair and if she decides not to marry him he will make her life uneasy .
