Many people have a stereotype that people with Autism can't be in a relationship. Grace destroys this stereotype with Gabe. As someone without ASD I enjoyed this book, and through Grace's thoughts and actions was able to get a better understanding of what is it like for a person on the spectrum. This book review highlights that people with Autism are also able to connect to Grace. Elizabeth Bartmess points out that while many other books give a false portrayal of an Autistic character, The state of Grace, although not perfect, can avoid this by staying in Grace's point of view and looking at how she sees the world. He doesn't understand why the other zebras in his class don't talk to him and why they judge him. One day he comes home crying telling his mom, "How come all anyone sees is my Autism stripe?" With the help of his mom, Zane learns to love all his stripes and understands that he is more than just his autism one. He realizes that it makes him unique and special. This book helps the readers who have Autism to except themselves for all that they are, and teaches them how to have a loving relationship with themselves. Including this book in my textset is beneficial because it allowed me and hopefully others to get a bigger picture about growing up with Autism. Similar to The State of Grace, Loop shows that people with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) can form relationships, or in this case a friendship. The story follows Renee, a girl who is non-verbal Autistic, and a neurotypical boy, Marcus. They are paired together to go canoeing and Marcus is very skeptical at first. However, he learns to communicate with Renee without words. They end up having a good time together and become friends. Of course they had to overcome challenges, but ultimately prove that people with ASD are fully capable of forming relationships. Sam has to learn to adjust to the changing world around him, with differences in his family and school life. A continuing plot line is Sam exploring what it means to be in a relationship. His loved ones are hesitant at first, but Sam's therapist reassures them that he is very capable of having a healthy romantic relationship. Sam has a girlfriend for the majority of the show, demonstrating that people with ASD can have these relationships, and connects to the themes of The State of Grace. This is a great show to watch to continue your understanding of ASD. All participants completed a number of questionnaires concerning romantic relationship, experience, desire to be in a romantic relationship, and romantic relationship satisfaction. The study revealed that "almost half the sample were in a romantic relationship at the time of the study. 29% of participants had been in romantic relationships previously. In terms of interest in romantic relationships, the majority of participants were interested in engaging in one and only 13% of participants who were not in a romantic relationship expressed no desire to be in one." Although there may be challenges, this article shows that most people with high functioning ASD are interested in romantic relationships and are able to have them. After reading The State of Grace, I began to understand that many people are undereducated about ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder). Specifically, some people believe that people who have ASD are unable to be in relationships whether that be romantic or not. I have curated texts to prove that this harmful stereotype is incorrect. Autistic Spectrum Disorder is a group of developmental disabilities that can cause significant social, communication, and behavioral challenges. The severity of symptoms can vary widely. Many people do not fully understand what this looks like and what it means. This creates many damaging stereotypes. I believe that more people should be educated on ASD in order to prevent these stereotypes from arising. My text set helps readers to get a better understanding of ASD and proves many stereotypes incorrect.
My text set was curated around The State of Grace by Rachael Lucas. The story follows Grace who has high functioning Autism while she experiences the many new things that come along with turning 16. She has to overcome many obstacles when she meets Gabe, her love interest. Since Grace has a hard time understanding social cues and expressing her emotions, she's not always sure where she stands with Gabe. While reading this book, I quickly realized that it is very similar to every other young adult romance story I have read in the past. I enjoyed reading about Grace and Gabe exploring their relationship and beginning to understand one another. Together, they break this stereotype that people with autism cannot be in a romantic relationship.
While reading this text set, I recommend you start with reading the article to get some background knowledge about ASD, before reading the books. Next, you should read The State of Grace which is the center of this text set. After that, the review will help you understand the book more and point out things you may not have noticed, as it is written by someone who has ASD. You should follow the review with the short film “Loop” which shows that Autism looks very different and isn't a group of definite symptoms for each person on the spectrum. Next, the children's story All My Stripes will help get a better sense of Autism at a younger age rather than in teenage years to develop a bigger picture. Lastly, Atypical is a great show to watch if you enjoyed The State of Grace as they have many similarities. It will also help you to continue and grow your knowledge of ASD while watching a funny and endearing show. Overall, I enjoyed reading/watching all of these stories and came out with a better understanding of not only ASD, but the harm single stories produce.
