We have had multiple opportunities for hands on experience, and we are learning so much about primary healthcare. We alternate between seeing patients and assisting in the emergency room. It has been a very positive experience thus far.

We are currently seeing acute and chronic patients and we are working alongside and presenting to the nurses and doctor. They are helpful, knowledgeable and accommodating and I believe we are gaining knowledge which will aid us in our future years as students and doctors.

We are at Skinner Clinic. We work closely with a doctor and the nursing staff. On the first day, we were given an orientation of the clinic and introduced to the staff. We consult patients and discuss the management plan with the doctor. We are mostly seeing chronically ill patients who are there for a follow-up visit. In the morning, before consultations start, we help with the screening at the gate.
The only down side we are experiencing is that we only present to one doctor which often results in us waiting for a while because she has many other commitments. There are times that we spend quite a long time with one patient because the doctor is unavailable. The patients then get irritated.
Overall, we are enjoying ourselves and we are learning a lot. The staff is very friendly and helpful.

The week at the Doornpoort Clinic has been a good one. On Monday, I received orientation from the facility manager and was introduced to all the staff members. Every morning for an hour, I helped out with the vitals. The remaining hours I would consult mainly chronically ill patients and then present and show the notes written to the nurses. The nurses would counter sign and show where improvement could be made or discuss any relevant topic/ management. Unfortunately the doctor was on leave the whole week and will be only returning next week. Whenever there was a procedure taking place, I would be called to come either observe or do the procedure such as putting up drips, taking bloods etc. I was also taught admin work such as how and when to refer a patient to the hospital. The staff there are very friendly and very helpful, always taking an opportunity to teach. The clinic is also very well organized and managed.

The staff at the Rietondale Military Sickbay were welcoming. On day 1, Captain Mathebula orientated and introduced us to everyone. We assist by performing skills such as drawing blood, measuring and interpreting Blood pressure, blood glucose, urine dipstix etc. We also take history, examine patients and discuss cases. We are expected to organize ourselves within the clinic so everyone gets adequate exposure to various cases. We rotate to work in observations, consultations and emergencies. We have to admit that Wednesday is going to be our favorite day because of the baby clinic. The Sickbay manages chronic conditions, however they don't have a set program in that regard.

We had ample opportunities to see patients, which was very educational. We really enjoyed our week here.
