As African Americans had patiently waited for justice and change for many years, Martin Luther King Jr. spoke up against discrimination. As a result, he was sent to Birmingham Jail for his nonviolent actions against the oppression of African Americans in the United States. He brought attention to how harmful segregation was and illustrated how the impacts on one community can destroy the interconnectedness of the nation as a whole. He also demonstrated the need for action and cooperation.

"Frankly I have never yet engaged in a direct action movement that was “well timed,” according to the timetable of those who have not suffered unduly from the disease of segregation. For years now I have heard the word “Wait!” It rings in the ear of every Negro with a piercing familiarity. This “wait” has almost always meant “never.” It has been a tranquilizing Thalidomide, relieving the emotional stress for a moment, only to give birth to an ill formed infant of frustration."

The use of metaphor and imagery conveys the idea that racial injustice is awful and in the way of progressing as a society. It is caused by a lack of empathy and a need for superiority. Once everybody comes to an understanding and lifts one another up, our nation will be better than ever and people will really know what it's like to love. Our nation will be stronger than ever when full justice is achieved.

The use of hypophora demonstrates the need for tension to enable change to occur. Hatred can only be maintained for so long. Once a group comes together to cause reform, the momentum of their movement will eventually outweigh the hatred. Actions will always be taken against hatred.

The use of metaphor shows how emotions can build up over time, and patience is lost. Once justice and peace has been denied for so long, the oppressed aren't able to continue to stay patient. The impatience will lead to action and change, therefore diminishing injustice.

"You may well ask, “Why direct action? Why sit-ins, marches, etc.? Isn’t negotiation a better path?” You are exactly right in your call for negotiation. Indeed, this is the purpose of direct action. Nonviolent direct action seeks to create such a crisis and establish such creative tension that a community that has constantly refused to negotiate is forced to confront the issue."
