Dr. Henry Jekyll is a man of fifty who occasionally feels he is battling between the good and evil within himself, thus leading to the struggle between his dual personalities of Jekyll and Edward Hyde. He has spent a great part of his life trying to repress evil urges that were not fitting for a man of his stature. He creates a potion, in an attempt to mask this hidden evil within his personality. However, in doing so, Jekyll transforms into Mr. Hyde, an evil creature without compassion or remorse. Jekyll has many friends and has a friendly personality, but as Hyde, he becomes mysterious and violent. As time goes by, Hyde grows in power. After taking the potion repetitively, he no longer relies upon it to set free his alter ego. Eventually, Hyde grows to be stronger than Jekyll. Stevenson never says exactly what Hyde takes pleasure in on his nightly forays. However, it is Hyde's violent activities that seem to give him the most thrills, driving him to attack and murder Sir Danvers Carew without apparent reason. A lawyer named Gabriel Utterson and Dr. Jekyll's butler end up breaking into Dr. Jekyll's lab. Inside, they find the body of Hyde wearing Jekyll's clothes and apparently dead from suicide. They find also a letter from Jekyll to Utterson promising to explain the entire mystery. Utterson takes the document home where he first reads Lanyon’s letter and then Jekyll's. The first reveals that Lanyon’s deterioration and eventual death resulted from the shock of seeing Mr. Hyde drinking a potion and as a result of doing so, turning into Dr. Jekyll. The second letter explains that Jekyll, having previously indulged unstated vices (and with it the fear that discovery would lead to his losing his social position) found a way to transform himself and thereby indulge his vices without fear of detection. But Dr. Jekyll's transformed personality Mr. Hyde was effectively a sociopath. Initially, Jekyll was able to control the transformations, but eventually he would become Hyde involuntarily in his sleep. At this point, Dr. Jekyll resolved to cease becoming Mr. Hyde. One night, he can't stop himself from killing Sir Danvers Carew; so, horrified, he decides to control himself by engaging in philanthropic work. One day, at a park, he believes himself redeemed, but looking down at his hands he realized he had trasformed into Mr. Hyde. This was the first time that an involuntary metamorphosis had happened in waking hours; Mr. Hyde needed help to avoid being caught. He wrote to Lanyon, asking his friend to retrieve the contents of a cabinet in his laboratory and to meet him at midnight at Hastie Lanyon's home. In Lanyon's presence, Mr. Hyde mixed the potion and transformed back to Dr. Jekyll. The shock of the sight instigated Lanyon's deterioration and death. Jekylle, returned to his home, find himself out of control. His ability to change back from Mr. Hyde into Dr. Jekyll had slowly vanished. Jekyll wrote that even as he composed his letter, he knew that he would soon become Mr. Hyde permanently and he wondered if Mr. Hyde would face execution for his crimes or choose to kill himself. He ended the letter saying "I bring the life of that unhappy Henry Jekyll to an end". With these words, both the document and the novella come to a close.

The theme of double

The theme of double characterize the novel. All the 19th century, the Victorian society, is characterized by the duplicity of life and the double nature of the human, full of contradictions. Even the place where the story is set reinforce this concept. In fact, Edinburgh, like London, has a double face; the new town with the big square and the old town full of murders and poverty. More over Jekyl’s house has two sides: the front sides used by the doctor is elegant and fair, and the back side used by Hyde is dark and sinister. The use of two names to speak of the same person is another stratagem to emphatize the duality. A very important element for the “double” is the mirror, in fact in that Dr Jekyll sees his alter ego, Mr Hyde. The inner conflict between good and evil emerges very clearly when he decides to start his experiments to divide “the two provinces [...] that compound man’s dual nature” . Jekyll theorises that each human being is torn and divided by the war between these two opposite sides. This observation suggests two other issues dealt by the author: the first is the duality - or sometimes multiplicity- of the human subject, which in this case coincides with the division between good and evil; the second issue is the relationship between body and soul. The movements of the psyche leave tracks even in the physical appearance of the individual and the body becomes the signifier of evil or good. The dream of the creature is to be able to live his passions freely, to give vent to the evil inclinations that live in his mind without any moral restraints or limits: even Dr Jekyll’s house, with a solid and respectable front, offers on the back, which overlooks a squalid secondary alley, a dirty and miserable courtyard, like a second nature to be kept strictly hidden. The two names have an interesting and symbolical meaning. Jekyll: can mean “I kill myself or other people”; Hyde: suggests something secrets hidden in something else.

A reputable London doctor and, along with Utterson, formerly one of Jekyll’s closest friends. As an embodiment of rationalism, materialism, and skepticism, Lanyon serves a foil (a character whose attitudes or emotions contrast with, and thereby illuminate, those of another character) for Jekyll, who embraces mysticism. His death represents the more general victory of supernaturalism over materialism in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
