I really liked strategy #4 "Pay Attention, Pause, Paraphrase" because it asks students to listen entirely without trying to formulate a response. It comments that this is something challenging for adults too, and I am definitely guilty. If I have a class that is more active, chatty, energetic, etc., I'll say put your hands on your head/shoulders/nose/knees. The students then complete the action, and students that did not hear follow the action that they see their classmates completing. She suggested that I observe Mr. Gonzales who uses a call and response techniques. Mr. G says, "Focus on me," and his students reply, "I'm focused man." From his example, I developed my own call and response for math, and the students have learned that if they are not listening after the call and response, they will miss important information.
