In 2007 Drew traveled to San Francisco to a social event with y-combinator trying to demo his prototype to anyone willing to see it. Dropbox was then accepted to the y-combinator program and it took off from there. Drew and Arash then moved to California in a two bedroom apartment. Drew knew a good amount of people at y-combinator so he would go to social events and hand carry his laptop around to people who would pay attention to a demo of Dropbox. One thing that was very clear from the y-combinator guidelines was that you need a co-founder. Paul Gram is one of the co-founders of the program. His main criteria for investing is co-founder. Starting a business can be really tough, with a co-founder it increases the chances of your idea to work out. Drews dad would bring home a ton of computer games for Drew to play. Drew loved playing them but he was most interested in how they work. When Drew was just in eighth grade he signed up to test an online game for a company, he started poking around and found a bunch of security vulnerabilities. Drew then emailed the developer over ICQ saying they need to tighten up a few of these things. The developer responded with “got it, thank you would you like to fix these things for us?”. They said they couldn’t pay him but they could give him stock options, and Drew said yes. Drew had some friends that moved to New York so every month or so he would head up there to visit them. He had about three hours till he was gonna be there so he wanted to get some work done. When he was taking out his laptop he realized he left his thumb drive back at home. Drew is now just sitting there thinking about how now he can't get any work done and he never wants to have this problem again. He started coding on the bus, he wanted to create a folder that kept everything together and in sync. Drew knew from the start that this business would grow organically and expedentionally. If one person wanted to share something with someone else through drop box, well then the other person would have to download dropbox and it just kept growing and growing this way.
