  • President Richard Nixon filed suits against companies polluting the water with mercury along with preventing oil drilling. EPA also has placed a limit on 100 ppb of chloroform, which can boost cancer.

    • In this time period, there was no extreme water pollution in Rome because the government often sent fresh water to clean out areas and built sewers/reservoirs. However, water pollution often came from industries that led to garbage flow into the water.
    How did humans get most of the energy they needed to survive?
    • Most humans began to convert to vegetarianism in this time period.
    Was conservation being practiced anywhere in the world?  How?
    • Some forms of conservation were being practiced through the government passing bills of water reform and some regulations. 
    Why was lead poisoning a problem?
    • Lead sweetened wine caused insanity to spread in the upper classes of Rome.

    • In the years after 1388, the government began to form anti-water pollution laws alongside the invention of good for environment gadgets such as the water closet.  
    How much wood was being harvested?  What effects was this having?
    • Extreme wood was being harvested by burning the wood which was causing extreme air pollution during the middle ages. Later on, governments would create regulations to stop this wood pollution. 
    In what ways was disease affecting the world?
    • The Bubonic plague killed 75% of the people in Europe and Asia leading to a decline in the economy. Furthermore, it created racially discriminating policies against Jews in Europe.

    • People began to take up anti-pollution like anti water and air pollution causes. There were discoveries made in medication that lead to remedies for diseases. Anti alcohol and anti animal extinction movements also began. 
    What did Thomas Malthus predict?
    • He predicted that if humans continued to expand their numbers then soon mass starvation would take place on earth. 
    Give examples of new pollution affecting the world. 
    • The water became unsafe to drink and sewage was found everywhere on the streets. It also created massive forms of diseases and insanitation everywhere. Forest fire begins and the pollution begins to take a toll on the environment. However, this also led to some of the first reform groups being formed who fought for anti pollution laws and regulations. 
    Why did sanitation become so important?
    • Sanitation became very important because many people were dying from the results of uncleanliness and horrible living conditions because of the enlightenment and industrialization. Hospitals were soon built to combat insanitation and diseases. Diseases like cancer and typhoid soon began to exist and infect people 
    How was the air pollution at this time?
    • There was air pollution however it was being combated with new inventions and new ways of production such as the stopping of wood burning.
    How was the water pollution at this time?
    • There was extreme water pollution with diseases and unsanitary water conditions being everywhere. water lines were built slowly however much of the population died due to water pollution and unsanitary conditions.
    What happened when the “Mother of the Forest” was cut down?
    • When the mother of the forest was cut down, it was used for display in carnival sideshows.

    • China constructs the Three Gorges Dam. There was a relocation of over one million people. Many people started to protest against the Three Gorges Dam.

    How does the world react to leaded gasoline?
    • The European Union banned leaded gasoline as a public health hazard on January 1, 2001. In May 25 of 2001, the worldwide public health campaign against use of leaded gasoline continued.
