A solid is a state of matter formed either from a liquid or a gas. The particles contained in a solid are held very tightly together giving solids definite shape and volume. The majority of solids have a specific geometric arrangement called crystals that determine their chemical and physical properties.

Liquids are made of free flowing particles and take the shape of a container, meaning that they have no definite shape but definite volume. When a solid is heated, the particles gain thermal energy. They begin to vibrate faster, and may eventually gain so much energy that the attractive forces holding them together so tightly.

Gas is a state of matter so free flowing that the particles that it's made of have enough kinetic energy to overcome attractions between them and escape the surface of water. Unlike solids and liquids, gasses do not have a fixed volume or shape yet gases expand to fill their entire container.

Plasma is the most common state of matter and is a state of matter consisting of positively and negatively charged particles at extremely high temperatures. The particles contained in plasma are moving so fast that electrons are stripped from the atom. Plasma can be found in stars, neon lights, and lightning. Negatively charged electrons freely stream through the positively charged ions.
