1) Stock Market Crash
~the stock market crash accelerated the global economic collapse of which it was also a symptom. Nearly half of the banks had failed and unemplyement was rising approaching 15 million people. The stock owners lose more than $30 billion dollars in just four days by taking loans to purchase stocks; furthermore, as the stocks fell they could not pay the loans back.
2) Bank Failures -
Throughout the 1930's, massive amounts of banks failed, up to 9,000 were shut down. Throughout this time, people used to withdraw all of their bank savings in advance just in case the bank closed. The reason why banks closed however were because the banks would give out massive amounts of loans but the people never repaid the monies.
3) Drought Conditions (the Dust Bowl) -
Although droughts weren't really a major cause of the great depression, it was still a cause that should be pointed out on. The droughts first occurred in the 1930s, and the droughts were so devastating that many could not even pay texted nor other debts, leaving most farmers to sell their farms for no profit.
Group: 6

1) Overproduction: The farmers overproduced products because, during the war, soldiers needed an abundant amount of resources, including food that farmers grew. Since the farmers had such an excess amount of crops after the war, and in attempt to pay off their debts, taxes, and living expenses, they lost money because of under-consumption. In effect of this, farmers lost their lands and homes.
2) Bank Failures: Americans were depositing small amounts of money into banks, and withdrawing large amounts because of the fear of losing their money since the banks were uninsured of deposit money.
3) Uneven Distribution of Wealth: During the great depression, there was an uneven distribution of wealth amongst the classes of society. The rich got richer and the poor got poorer. Two-thirds of families had little disposable income. Many families had to pay off debts from installment plans, because of this there was little demand for other products. Manufacturers, in turn, cut production and laid off employees.
-Group 3

Three of the main causes of the Great Depression was….

1) Bank Failures. During the 20s many banks were prospering with a surplus of people creating accounts to take loans from banks and make deposits. However, a huge turn of events occurred after the stock market crash of 1929; after the first 10 months of the crash in 1930 over 744 banks were closed down. By the time 1933 came around the banks had lost $140 billion dollars’ worth of deposit money.

2) Stock market crash 1929. The stock market crash that occurred on October 29, 1929 – also known as Black Tuesday – was probably one of the major causes of the Great Depression. Stock prices began to decline in September and the early parts of October. By the 18th of October the fall had begun and investment companies and banks were attempting to stabilize the market by buying up stocks in great quantities. By Tuesday (October 29th), stock prices collapsed completely and a record of over 16 million shares were traded in a single day. Two months after the crash, stockholders had lost over $40 billion and thousands of investors were wiped out. By the end of 1930, America had slowly begun to regain some of its loses but it was not enough to stop America from falling into the Great Depression.

3) Overproduction. During the roaring 20s, technology increased creating a rise in the manufacturing of products. As production escalated, the demand for these products decreased. The decline occurred because countries in Europe began to be more independent reducing the need for American services. Around this time, most Americans were in debt due to bank closings and the stock market crash which also contributed to the decline in demand. While everything declined, there was little to no input to balance the economy. Overall, overproduction helped cause The Great Depression.

1. Crash of the stock market: It occurred on Black Tuesday, October 29,1929. It was called the great crash and it was the most drastic loss, wiping out investors. The United States invested so much money in stocks and expansion. In the end all the money was lost.

2. Bank failures: after the stock market crash in 1929 many people withdrew their money. They didn’t want to gamble the safety of their money. Due to all the withdrawals, many banks began to lose business. By 1933, depositors saw $140 billion disappear through bank failures.

3. Reduction in purchasing across the board: when the stock market crashed, individuals of all classes stopped purchasing items. This decrease caused a cutback in production, therefore a cutback in the workforce. As people lost their jobs, they couldn’t continue to pay for items through installment plans, this resulted in their items getting repossessed.
