I agree, most students do not appreciate science because they find it very difficult, which makes it difficult for them to make decisions in their daily situations.
In my classes I always try to make a parallel between the concepts and / or phenomena of science and everyday situations of the student.
They are often surprised by the connection between the phenomena they know and the scientific explanation, other times I "destroy" ill-conceived ideas.

I totally agree. Science is taught too theoretically, and instead of beginning by experimenting it and then deducting, most times we begin by teaching them the theory and later on applying. so, students are never given the opportunity to came up with their own ideas and to lose the fear of making mistakes and learning from them.

Kids love science and often ask good question about real world. But science is hard for them. They must thing scientific and critical and invest a lot of effort and are not always willing to invest their time for learning so they search for easy solution.

We need to provide them with problems whose context they can experience.We should engage students by giving them problems they want to solve the question and the answer of which are relevant to them.We should use 21st-century learning models as hands-on learning, collaboration. Education has to deal and respond to students' emotions. This asseveration is the answer for the students' lack of interest in the STEM field. As an example, today in the chemistry class I had to cover the Gay-Lussac's law and knowing this, I asked them the previous class (as "homework") to talk to their families and find out how the pressure cooker works.
Finally, they have been the ones who have explained the Gay-Lussac's law to me and they have confessed me that they were really impressed about how their mums had that knowledge about gases... In conclusion, if real-life challenges are close to the students, STEM careers will be increased too.

On the other hand, because some of us don't have adequate equipment. STEM is not easy to explain using only the black board and piece of chalk. I agree with the indicated idea. I try to work with my students problems about real-life related to our subject (Chemistry) and other STEM fields. Examples: relationship of CO2 emissions and fuel use in cars (according to data provided by the manufacturer), advantages of home condensing boilers, information about medicaments, selfheating drinks, etc.

To find solutions to problems or to answer complex questions, the necessary technologies must be identified. In addition, the limits, risks and effects of this technology should be analyzed. After this stage, children can develop new technologies by using the technology and create their own technologies.

However, the point that should be considered here is that only the digital world does not come to mind when it comes to technology, and not just these things are expected from children. My students very often ask "Where will I apply this knowledge in real life?" They understand that without the scientific knowledge there would be no technology available to them today. They enjoy them with pleasure. But they are not going to create something for themselves, so they think it's not necessary to learn those difficult things. When we learned speed, I asked that they measured their speed of walking to school. They just turned on applet on the phone . They did not need either a distance or a time measure or a formula to apply. :)

I don't teach Science but I agree that the science doesn't appeal to my students. I often listen to my colleagues and they tell me the same. Beside not being able to relate science to the real world, the main problem of our students is that they always see the activities as a part of their evaluation or an assesment, even is it is a real-life related activity. Certainly some students have no inclinations towards STEM, and others do not have the skills to think critically and learn by making connections with the real world. Maybe there is a curriculum error that slowly but surely is changing in Romania. In order to motivate them and not to be crippled for the achievement of some qualifiers, I try to develop critical thinking in my students and where time allows them to propose real life problems to solve the assimilated knowledge during the teaching hours and to find individual solutions.

I surely agree that students do not appreciate science. They do not relate it to the real world because curricula do not allow teachers to make students curious about the world. The main goal, specially in high school, is to offer as much knowledge as you are obliged to so that students can pass the exams. Imagine that high schools are competing to each other on the basis on the number of students that managed to pass the exams to enter the university. A very dissatisfying situation for both teachers and students. So, a teacher has to stand against the whole educational system in order to practice science in an alternative way so as to attract students to real world problems, to make them curious about the world, to teach them critical thinking. Fortunately, there are teachers who really try to differentiate form the main stream in order to foster students to appreciate science. However, being part of an educational system imposes serious restrictions.

We should bring real life problems to the class. Experiments attract the attention of students.

Learning by doing is basic for learners between 11 and 14. They don't love studying in the books, they prefer doing lab activities. This help them to understand rapidly and to remember infos. As science is everywhere in the real world, the role of the teacher is to lead them to realize it. When I studied science at school we use to study merely in the books. I hated science and I cannot remember anything about what I studied. As a teacher for students with special needs, I've understood a lot about it and I am much more interested in science than I've ever been before. I completely agree that students can’t relate stem to the real world. It is a big challenge to inspire students to study stem subjects and show them real life applications. Providing students with the real life problems to solve arouse their curiosity and interests. For example water shortage is a real life problem that affects people’s life but if it isn’t a problem for our students’ own life, they might not care about it. Not only that students don't have appreciation for science but a majority of elementary school students doesn't understand importance and joy that solving problems brings. In my opinion, children are to early introduced and engaged with technology with no control. Modern parents can not track fast developing changes and busy life, so we get uninterested student with no ability of linking knowledge but with skilled fingers and fast memory.
Going out of classroom, connecting with nature where student can solve real problems and situation is one way to solution...

Students are much affected about science lessons because of their parents friends and relatives. They come to class with biases like science is hard, and we teach them things that they will never ever use it again for their rest of life. In this case I am basically trying to show them the taste of being able to understand the nature, explain why and how things are happening. Letting them to find where they can use the information they have taught in their life can be a nice closure of the class. For example in my senior classes I have taught circular motion and discussed rotor in amusement parks. I went through notes of my colleagues and they are very different. I think science is not easy and students have to work hard. All new 21st century skills are important but without work there will not be results. I mean, how they solve any problem if they do not know basic mathematical or chemical or physical laws, principles and methods of solving equation. They have to learn! Well, my students are quite interested in my lessons and really appreciate that the subject can help them in the real world - perhaps because I make many correlations between what we study and everyday life. I do not think many of them will take a career STEM because they think they should study too much, and this is not even wrong ... Many of them are very good with new technologies but they lose concentration too quickly. I am computer programming teacher, so I'm trying to relate my subject with real life problems, asking students to write algorithms for problems they need to solve in real life (by calculating the final grade between the grades obtained in the evaluations, by sorting a bunch of things on different criteria, by finding the right combination to open a 4 digit lock, etc.). Yes I do agree that unless science is taught with experimentation and application we cannot create interest in the children. If we reflect on the earlier scientists who repeatedly observed the day to day phenomena and applied their knowledge and built upon it to widen the research. Sadly we are in a rat race to complete the syllabus and have hardly anytime to let students explore. This is one problem. Another problem is the teacher is so very tech savvy that she finds all virtual media to make students understand those concepts which could be done physically. This also develops their manipulative skills.

In my opinion, the best way to make STEM subjects more attractive for young students is to show them that science, engineering, technology and mathematics are present in their lives at all times.
I also think the involvement of their families, the entry of STEM materials into their homes, from very early ages, is very important. I believe that scientific-technological vocations are forged since childhood and should be promoted and supported by people from their immediate surroundings.
The use of project-based learning, as well as a greater interdisciplinarity in work within the school center, seem vital to attract students to STEM subjects.

I strongly agree with the statement. And the problem is that most textbooks are downright boring to children at young age. They get the impression that science is simply reading and trying to remember as much as possible in order to pass your test. Here are my tricks to break this circle:

- invite inspiring scholars or medalists from international science forums and olympiads who could explain and show the students what they do on a daily basis;

- do experiments in and outdoors or show videos of experiments and ask questions about the expected results and then to interpret the outcome of the experiment;

- make children keep scientific diaries where they describe the experiments as real scolars do;

- allocate time for individual or team projects that they later present to the class or other sudents/teachers;

Science is so much fun and it is a shame we keep this secret!

I do not agree that students are not interested in STEM classes. They like Science classes with experiments, they are eager to Technology and ICT, they adore engineering, although there is not much time for that in the curriculum. What they do not like so much is algorithms in Math and problems that are not connected to real life. I teach chemistry to students aged 16 in a high school whit the aim to train them as cooks.
I really guess that the time students spend learning and how chemistry is taught are more effective than how well-equipped and staffed the chemistry lab is. It is definitely does matter how we teach chemistry and science in general. In Italy several schools don't have a chemistry lab well-equipped expecially in schools where the chemistry is teached only 2h for week. So, in order to give to the students the real sense of that they doing and in an interdisciplinary vision, I try everytime to produce the real activities which they can spend in their future jobs also.
In the picture you can see the effects of the red cabbage juice on the rice when it is cooked in different enviroment (acid or basic).

This activity was connected with the study of the acid and basic substances and indicators of pH that we can found out in a common kitchen. This is an example of how chemistry would be usefull in surprising the future customers of my students!

I, as a student, thought that chemistry means to learn by heart definitions, formulas and difficult names of substances because my chemistry and Phisics teachers teach me that way. I always try to establish links between science, technology, society and environment. One of the most important task of a teacher is to make their students think critical about real problems.

Students need to ask and answer questions; they need to put hypothesis, discuss results and finally propose possibilities to solve the issue.

One experiment I usually do in my classes as I Biology teacher is biotechnology activities - - STEM activity -
For my activity

I selected products that students enjoy and are part of their diet such as dairy products, for example, fresh cheese or yogurt.
This simple experiment obliges review historical data, and also to think process of cheese production. Students need to measure and discuss the conditions, the variables evolved specially temperature and pH. They have the opportunity to discuss the quality of milk, the importance and benefits of pasteurization for health, and also the conditions for storage of this product. This is an example of STEM activity.

I totally agree that not only students but any human wants to learn about anything because she/he is curious about it. STEM problems for students need to be selected from real life. Because non believable problems are not worth solving. For example, it is difficult to apply STEM on every subject in Biology. I think it's best to ask the students and identify the real life problem. In one application we realized that we are having difficulty in learning the biological terms associated with the Ecosystem Structure. Then we created a problem situation. They will find " Shark Tale and Happy Feet " animation
and find sections of biological terms related to the Ecosystem Structure. They were going to make a video with a video of 2 minutes and a video engineer. As a result, my students, who were doing quite a master work, came out in simple jobs.But an image engineer has experienced how it works and. created a product.Discuss. From the same flims they often saw different parts and created awareness. Imagination is more important than thinking. And they showed that they were the owner of learning...

I think that interdisciplinary apprach is the key to engage students: if you think a STEAM project (including the A of Arts) from a separated point of view (S. T. E. A. Based on my experience as a science teacher, students have difficulties in approaching STEM subjects because they find them difficult at first. In fact, I think it is an instinctive reflection of mental closure in the face of something that is perceived as abstract and of little use. What I have always tried to communicate to my learners is that science is everywhere around us and we could not live without it. So that these do not remain just words, I bring to class continuous experiments even simple ones that demonstrate the applicability of STEM materials. We have to make our students curious, we have to entertain their minds, tease their interest and facilitate the theory with tangible examples. Only in this way will it be possible to learn from the texts and study laws and formulas. STEM in everyday life is possible, although it takes more time and effort for the teacher to prepare such a lesson. But if we are STEM teachers, we have this mission! we can also use many sources to draw inspiration for our activities. Here are a couple of ideas of my lessons:
1) Periodic table used as “battleship”: the game is the ideal tool to teach a subject STEM.

My students prefer to learn history or geography. Mathematics and physics are considered as demanding subjects. Students, maths do not associate with real life. The problem also exists when applying knowledge on real problems, where they can not estimate the ultimate solution. In a class of 20 students, 2-3 students are fully able to master the STEM area, others have decided that they do not need it in life and that it is not worth the effort. Well, with the changing trends of learning, teaching of science and/or STEM topics has tom keep pace with.

Modern day student wants knowledge at his/her fingertips, easily and fast accessibility of relevant information.

Often, students lack motivation and appreciation of what we do in class .... one of the reasons could be .... as the topic of our discussion suggests ..... unable to connect with real world problems.

I teach Physics, which is an experimental science. So, for me it is easier to connect with real world problems through a guiding experimental activity (mostly hands on) to start a lesson. I use sports science's videos and hands on lab activities to teach all mechanics. Simulation labs, video analysis, smart phone apps are some of the other tools I use to help my students with establishing a real world connection of the topic at hand.

Interdisciplinary and Interactive STEM activities are a certain hit.

I´m glad I teach Biology and the connection between my classes and the news is almost daily! This is a global problem that has to be solved. I think all of us as teachers and researchers need to find a way or ways to help our current and future generations to overcome this problem. As teachers we need to motivate students by emphasizing importance and utility of the mathematical concepts taught. While convinced by the utility and importance of a concept students certainly become more receptive.
Problem solving is really the heart of STEM investigations. Providing students with real-world problems to solve fuels their curiosity and investigative interests. Providing students with real-world problems and asking them to brainstorm solutions will bring their higher order thinking skills into play. But for me, identifying real-world problems that students can solve is one of the hardest parts of creating STEM lessons.

The science curriculum in primary school is oriented towards experimentation and use of the laws of physics to explain everyday life phenomena. Of course it is very important to enrich the curriculum with activities and projects that connect science to real life. My students particularly like creating functioning constructions (eg vehicles, electric constructions) with simple materials. I think the problem of not relating science to real life is much worse in secondary education and especially in high school, where the focus is mainly on exercises and exams.

Of course, the relationship between STEM and reality is not only very important, but essential. As a professor of Biology and Physics-Chemistry, I try that the classes meet this requirement through different techniques: a) Before proposing a theoretical concept, we reason about real situations (for example, how can a car be lifted with a hydraulic jack); b) We investigate the concept and its applications (Pascal's principle); c) We build a model or model (a hydraulic elevator, a hydraulic press or whatever you can think of); d) We define in what environment of society we could use it; e) Whenever possible we show it to the rest of the educational community (publication, scientific fair ...). We also do it in an interdisciplinary way with other subjects: Technology, Applied Sciences, Plastic Education, History or even linguistic subjects (Second Language).

I am a science teacher in secondary education. Students like biology, astronomy, experiments in physics and chemistry but they are not eager to make a real effort in order to follow such a carreer because they don't believe they can make money this way. They prefer to make a sailing carrer (big salaries and a quick access to a job) or to be turned to economics that they think it is an easier subject. Scientists for them are fool people that work a lot and they don't earn much.
However I try to present them stem jobs that they can offer to them a good salary and a really interesting job like robotics and astronomy.

Kids are show curiosity about phenomena that happens around them. They really want to know how it happen, how it works, how it can be made. I believe that real life examples and learning relating activities are important in STEM education. Children connect their experiences and engage into the learning process. Also multi-modal presentations allow different learning profiles to capture the learning subject and enhance understanding and participation.

I think especially young learners in primary level don't realize what is happening around them, when they realize they think it's difficult to solve the problems in nature, science etc. That's why they don't want to study and fail also in STEM. 1. I present the subject, the issue in the student's language.

My experience in teaching shows that everything is related to how a teacher teaches a lesson, how he involved the students in this lesson and what methods he follow. Sometimes I face problems because some students think they don't need to learn a foreign language till they graduate from university and start to look for a job. So I have to give them performance tasks, make them prepare projects, act out dialogues, etc. I'm also an educational coach and when I work with my students the biggest problem is that they don't know the occupations exactly. I ask them some questions about the professions they want to do like Where do they work? How much do they earn? What are the working conditions? What kind of qualifications do they need to find a good job? etc. Generally the answer is "I don't know!".

one of the problems in my country relates to the curriculum, and what it is expected to be taught in the science classes because they are more focus in the calculus and the definitions than in the applications.
It is in that sense that we need to use interdisciplinary activities that will help us as teachers to make our students see the importance of this subjects.

In my country, Greece, science, is considered a very difficult theoritical part of the school program, that does not create the feeling of understanding to our students. In my school i do believe that students understand that courses and jobs related to STEM are the ones with employability and profitable. But being a football player it´s more easy or a model. I surely agree that most of my students don't have an appreciation for science because they can't relate it to the real World. They always questions the physics topics whether they will use in their daily life or not. In sort of cases I come up with ad idea like. First of all, I have tried to engage them to the topic with a related video (Our National Education Ministry website: http://www.eba.gov.tr/video?&channel=190)or simulations. My students love science. they are very passionate with forms of energy, electricity etc. That's because every time i try to connect our lesson with a real life problem and have a hands on activity. For example, this week every student built his own car with wooden tongue depressors, plastic tops and rubbers in order to explain how dynamic energy of the rubber is transformed into kinetic energy. When time and resources allow, getting different career experts to speak to students about the importance of the taught material in their profession is an eye-opener. Without considering cases of "early vocations", perhaps some students are not inclined to sciences because they perceive it as something remote, unhelpful, or very difficult (it is something that needs effort, precision, study ...). But I don't think that's exclusive of the "hard sciences", but of any science (natural, human ...). This is the reason wyhy, in my opinion, our mission is, in the early ages in which I work, bring them closer to that world so they can live it as something more normal.
In my case what I usually do is raise small problems as if they were a game and from a practical perspective.

I don't think the word "appreciation" is the right one. They do appreciate new discoveries and breakthroughs in STEM, but they do it because of the "wow" factor involved. What they don't have is the motivation to approach everyday phenomena as a "wow" event (which they would do if they had the patience to explore the intimate mechanisms by which Nature operates). This is, I think, our role as teachers, to introduce them again to that "everyday magic"...

I think that it makes a difference when students have time to observe and think about their sorrounding. If adults allow the kids to observe and ASK relevant questions about technological objects (inventions) or natural phenomena, we could provide a first step to appreciate scientific advances.
Apart from working with a selection of relevant everyday scientific topics, I think that it is very constructive to start the lessons investing 5 single minutes to invite student to comment if they have read about, watched or discovered any STEM issue that they would like to mention or ask about it. They really surprise you! There are plenty of opportunities to arise questions and doubts in their everyday activities.

I usually think of something from everyday life that can "illustrate" the subject I am about to teach and I ask pupils to think about it and ask them questions related to the subject we are about to explore. Then I tell them to ask questions about it. I pick one of the questions and make it our centre problem and from then on they find ways to explore the problem and eventually solve the problem, ie, answer the question. Last week the question that came up was "who has the biggest lungs in the classroom?" the answers were very diverse but eventually I gave them a list of materials and they had to elaborate an experiment to answer the question, then they had to explain why they did it and to interpret the different results. A discussion between all groups' results brought up a more complete answer to the initial question.

Yes, I strongly agree with this statement. In my opinion, the way Science is being taught right now only prepares kids to solve unuseful problems. Real problems, related to real life, which are also related to Science are not being studied in the class, which means kids think real life is not related to Science.
Also, kids find it very diffecilt to find Science in life, so maybe they could find something they're curious about and try to find the Science behind it. I'm not a STEM teacher but as a librarian I always tell my students that they have to connect knowledge they got in school with everyday life. For example - music sounds beautiful because patterns like timing, rhythm and pitch make it that way. Think about it: when you read music, it's a lot like reading math symbols. A time signature is written like a fraction, and notes have different shapes to tell you the length or time. So if you play piano, you are math in action. :)

I think that this option is right. Most students (in Greece at least) do not relate meaningfully with STEM classes because they think that is is something out of this world. They believe that making a Chemistry project or solving a Math problem by using a PC is just a part of their curriculum and some of them deal with it as a fun part of their class. Since I teach in High Economic school I always try to connect math with economic problems such as marketing, market surways, anlyzing functions of production, profit, etc. That is how I bring real life in my classroom. I also invite people from real life (bankars, risk mnagers, ...) to talk about their job and to explain to my students the importance of math in their jobs.

When I make my student comprehend that a maths problem that we are studying on has similar application in other disciplines. the orijin of the problem and to which proglams it has solution. I think that students do not appreciate STEM subjects because they are difficult enough, and also on my opinion they are more difficult than literature or human science subjects. Surely if we offer these themes in a real landscape they become more friendly, but the difficulties remain, if we want go over a simple superficial view. I love teaching science, and I like making activity such PBL and IBL, but sometimes that's not enough. At the age of 12 - 13 sometimes everything that needs diligence is rejects by pupils. Young people today wants everything soon and they want being satisfied. So one of the most important part of my job is to engage them but also to teach them the importance of knowledge, the happiness to learn something. They can't think about the future in our same way, the percentages of jobs required don't have a great meaning for them. We also have to remember that some activities that I watched on the videos shown in the course need based knowledge, such as maths, digital literacy, ect ...
we have to teach first the base and that's not funny! I mean to solve equations you need to know algebra!

I think the point is the curriculum itself and also the educational policy of government. Since we, as teachers, have to respond in front of the inspectors if and how we followed the curriculum, if and why we were not doing this, why the range of exam result is not so good - well, we are forced to respect the constraings of the curriculum. I am not a Science teacher, but I am a mother and my two children studied Sciences in school. My son is now working in IT field, and my daughter is student at Architecture. Both of them apllies A.I. in their work and they became aware about the role of it in the real life. BUT - this was happened because they both have digital skills and the curiosity to discover more and more, to read, and they are creative, and not due to the curriculum. Yes, I agree that most students don't appreciate STEM subjects, but I also think that as Danny Doucette mentions part of the problem is we only prepare for answering tests and not really understanding what is happening around us. As a Physics' private lesson teacher I try to focus more on the ideas and concepts than in solving equations, after all, these are only a way to express the phenomena, but it takes more time to do it, so we are never at the same pace as their school's tests.

I agree with that most of the students have difficulties in learning science because they are not aware of why it is important for them. They are mostly asking to me "Teacher, where we will use this knowledge? Why are we learning?" Then I answer them about that point actually physics is everwhere in daily life. I believe that most students don’t like science lessons because they can’t fully understand the content and relate them to the real world. In class, the teacher presents the lecture of the new content and teaches the formulas related with the subject. The teacher uses lab works, gives real life examples for the students to understand and relate them with the real world. But this is not enough for the students to understand throughly in a limited time. The students then try to complete their homeworks with the limited knowledge they gain in class. Since their knowledge and experince on the subject is limited, they cannot succeed and find STEM lessons difficult and useless.

In order to prevent this, we can teach our students how to gain the knowledge and then in class we can help the students master the knowledge they gained. We can give real life problems to investigate and understand how it works, before lecturing the subject. After that we can discuss in class what they have gathered. We can also perform real world events in class and make them think about how it works and brainstorm, before we lecture the subject. Then give the students homework to make researches related with the subject.

If the students understand and analyze what is going on around them, how things work and relate their knowledge with real world situations then they will be more interested in STEM lessons.

The fact that learning is effective only if connected to real life is very true. The best achievements ever obtained by my students have been when they had to create something real that required a learning content. This is why Project Based Learning is the best practice for education. But in school there are many issues to face: limited time, strict external evaluation, parents requirements,...

The connection with real life is very important in education, in every subject. In primary school when I teach something I always try to relate it to the real life: buy the bread at the bakery or the apples at the market, try to pay, use the money.... these are small things that give value to school activities. In primary school is not so hard to relate STEM discipline to real life, because children are still curios, they want to know and discover everything. In the first grade, I used observation as method, for changes in the nature, during a short time period. As a scientific activity,children had to measure and record the temperature (in the morning and evening), the time at which it darkened, to draw symbols to illustrate the weather.
Another interesting activity related to real life the observation of plants.All started from the fact that one of the plants we used, had a yellow spot on the leaf. We gave the plants different living conditions (heat, light, water, temperature, fertilizer) and noticed their transformations. They learn what we have to offer to plants for having them growing
The coloring a carnation's petals by introducing their stem into a colorful solution, has demonstrated to students how substances flow from stem to inflorescence.

Yes, I agree that students cannot relate to science being taught in the classroom because it is rarely brought outside and connected to their lives. I used to do a lot of experiments because I thought it was capturing the students, but I was failing to increase critical thinking by asking questions and making it more relevant to their lives. Now, what ever concept I teach, I make sure to apply it to their lives as young learners. My student are not very interested in the science taught in the classroom. Because they question what information they will use in everyday life.I've seen it and they've learned more fun in the information they'll use in their lives.
In mathematics, they did not like to learn geometric shapes. I also think it is important to have a connection to real life problems to motivate the pupils to learn. Yes, I agree that most students cannot relate STEM subjects to the real world because they only solve "problems" in the multiple choice tests! We have to change this kind of testing and grading. They need to think out of five-choice-box! In our STEM workshop, we try to give them a problem in a meaning context which is related to a real-world problem. They work in groups and try to use scientific method steps to solve it, so they have to search, ask questions, plan, design, create, test and see the result. If their solution doesn't work, they try again.

We tried to connect the scientific theories with the real world by organizaing a contest for students (aged 15-18 ) named "Links to the real world". Was a succesfull idea and is the third year when we organize it.
The topics are connected with maths, physics, chemistry, biology and geography in English (CLIL) but anchored in reality.
We implemented the contest in multinational team as activity during an Erasmus+ KA2 Strategic partnership named " Cross-curricular Approches to Mathematics and Sciences in Formal and informal Contexts", granted by European Union.

I am a teacher of English but as a CLIL team coordinator I often work with science teachers to plan modules. The approach used is project-based learning and we use the eTwinning platform to make the students work within real projects. This year I’m involving a class in an eTwinning and global project based on SDGs and some of the goals are a good basis to link STEM classes to the real world. I agree with this argument because back at the primary, secondary and even high schools I was one of those students. :) But now I try to implement science into my life as much as possible and recommend my students do the same by sharing my own experiences. You can also identify if some companies or research center would be willing to have your students visit them. Today for example it was an open day at the Von Karman institure for fluid mechanics, they had prepared some funny experiences for children and in addition my boys could do an onsite visit. This makes things a lot more exciting. However I think that a main issue in teaching STEM is that children thinks that children are naturally giifted for mathematics and are not explained enough that work will bring the results.

On school, I try to give everyday examples. I noticed that if I explain fraction like pizza slices, the children are more responsive. Also, when there are equations to be solved, I used instead of variables, fruits(apples, pears) or clothes(dresses, blouses). The answers come faster. Of course, I totally agree. Most of students do not feel that science is useful and that's because they haven't been taught in the adequate way and also beacuse the are not able to see the great and useful part of learning science.
To solve this problem, I teach my student science using real problems, experimenting and guiding students so that they are able to establish conclusions, reasoning, experimenting and helping each other. They must know real life, real problems or simple real experience, and by presenting students these situations, they become attracted to learn science.

I teach in an Italian primary school and usually children are very attracted to science. The level is more cognitive in Italy, than experimental and this lack of experiential laboratories is mainly due to a choice to allocate funds to other activities: in Italian primary schools a science laboratory is missing. Science teachers often explain the concepts without any laboratory activity, the younger ones add some laboratory activities but the number of hours to devote to the study takes away some fundamental moments to consolidate the knowledge or develop the scientific thought through the hypotheses and the capacity of thinkering applied also in some real contexts. So I think it is time for us teachers to open the eyes of the scholastic world, parents and students above all, on the scientific reality that we live every day and that we do not notice. Maybe starting with a simple survey of what is technology at school or works on the basis of STEMs.My experience is mainly based on the teaching of technology and I find that both families and pupils are ready to share the enthusiasm that leads me to more often carry out workshop activities, groups of involvement with parents and eTwinning projects.

Yes, I agree that most students can’t relate STEM subjects to the real World. Learning is effective only if connected to real life is very true. The best achievements ever obtained by my students have been when they had to create something real that required a learning content. Namely, Project Based Learning is the best practice for education. I think using; Iquiry Based Science Education and Modelling Based Science Education in science courses, is vey helpful for reaching the course goals. In my lessons, I try to give them a problem in a meaning context which is related to a real-world problem. I agree with the statement above. We have to engage our students, connenct STEM with everyday life, approach it through fun, creative and maybe outdoor activities (ones that transend the classroom walls) and show them that through STEM activities we can change our way of thinking about our world and everyday problems.

I agree that a large amount of students don't like STEM subjects because they feel they are not good at them. If we show students how they use STEM skills in their lives everyday we will build their confidence and therefore change their attitude towards these subjects. Real world problems and an engaging context is the most important factor in my opinion.

I agree. It is very hard in the first place to get students engaged in the classroom. The only way students will be able to retain and understand a subject is by making it relatable to them. Most students find it hard to grasp science because they do not find it relatable to them.
