Throughout the book Edwin has longed to be involved in Native American activities. He also was having to look up many things on the internet because he wasn’t taught them. With that, he had to invent his own native identity by getting an internship and working with the powwow committee, which is shown in the first quote. In the second quote it shows how Edwin was trying to savor the moment of his first powwow but Blue convinced him to learn about it because he didn’t know much about it so he had to invent a new/his own Native Identity.

These quotes both show maintenance however just in different forms. The first quote shows how Opal is maintaining the native identity that was passed down to her by her mother. Her mother told her the same things that she is telling the kids. The other quote shows maintaining because Opal and her mom wanted to connect to her relatives and keep their native culture strong for years to come.

Sadly Blue grew up without knowing her native identity, during her chapters Blue understands she is different but early on wasn’t sure why. She later finds out the truth about her adoption, when she finds out that she wants to associate herself with native culture. She’s trying to reclaim her native identity that she once had, she does this by getting a job at the Native American center and with that she starts seeing part of her that she thought was gone.

Throughout my life I would say I have needed to sort of invent my own identity. I have always had a love for sports, one my parents never really had. That is one example of inventing my identity, another way I've invented my own identity is through my college search. My parents both were essentially told where they had to go to college but I have the opportunity to go to any school that’s realistic price wise. I enjoy inventing my own identity because it helps me feel more unique. Inventing my own identity has helped me grow as a person.
