How the African Americans are Treated

Even though the African Americans of the Civil War were let free by the Emancipation Proclamation, it didn't protect them from racism or injustice by the Union. A good example of this was the pay that the African Americans received compared to the whites. African Americans were paid 10 dollars as if they would labourers, while the whites were paid 13 dollars, this caused outrage and made a African American group of soldiers stand up to this, however it was largely unsuccessful and their leader, William Waker was charged with mutiny and executed, however change eventually did happen because of this and congress gave black people equal pay in 1864,

Civil war Soldiers went through a lot of hard times, but also had much free time on their hands. When they were involved in a battle it was often a bloody, gory battle. The doctors that helped the soldiers out on the field were not aware of sanitary measures so many times soldiers died from disease more often than injury. When soldiers were not on the battle field they had to find pastimes to keep busy. Reading and writing were popular pastimes, as well as playing cards, baseball, and most of all music.

1)The soldiers that got saved and brought to the war hospital had to suffer amputations without amnesia, very unsafe and unhealthy surgery conditions, and often caught dieses from those unhealthy conditions.
2) The expiriances they had in these hospitals dramatically effected these soilders after their time in the war. It caused PTSD from the gruesome conditions and the pain from surgerys. Also blood was shared between patients because sergions didnt properly clean equipment so the soldiers got dieses that effected them for the rest of their lives.

In the time of the civil war, medical knowledge was limited. They didn’t know how to treat diseases and they didn’t understand what causes infections. Many people had to get their legs or arms amputated. There wasn’t much medical knowledge, which caused many people’s injuries to be worse and it caused a lot of people to die. This impacted the country in the future because there were several people that died that could have been saved with more medical knowledge. This could have affected the war in many ways. If there was more medical knowledge, many lives could have been saved.

How were African American soldiers treated? They did not the same pay as white soldiers they made $10 a month and white soldiers made $13 a month and they did not receive as much training or as sturdy weapons as white soldiers. They were not even considered soldiers they were considered as laborers.

If African Americans were caught trying to flee, Union commanders would have to choose what to do with the slaves. This is because there was no government policies put in place. Some would return the slaves to their owners, some would keep them out of Union camps and others would pay slaves for them to do non-combat work such as cooking, carpenters, guides, and drivers. This impacted the African Americans by not letting them flee or be free/escape.

Clara helped and healed the soldiers even during the times when bullets we’re flying in the battle field she still went out to heal them. The nurses got paid little even though they were risking their lives also. She also brought food and supplies for the men who fought in the war. During Clara’s wartime experience led her to discover the American Red Cross in 1881. Ajla
