In World War I, both sides constructed elaborate trench and dugout systems opposing each other along a front, protected from assault by barbed wire. The area between opposing trench lines called no mans land was fully exposed to artillery fire from both sides. Attacks, even if successful, often sustained severe casualties as a matter of course.

Trench Warfare caused so many casualties because of the ability for enemy artillery shells to fall on the trenches and many would die in the enclosed space. It was also very hard for offensive forces to infiltrate the trenches because of the "No Mans Land" in between the two trenches.
