Making connections are in important, especially in music. In my opinion, the key to appreciating music is making sense of what we're hearing. In order to do that we must be able to identify and recognize some element of the production. According to Ratliff, one of the most important things to recognize within any piece is repetition. In Every Song Ever, he states that " repetition in music works best when their patterning remind you of breathing, or walking, or running." Identifying any rhythm or beat and making that subconscious connection to the sound of our own human functions is magic in itself.

This is why there's importance in mastering the art of repetition. A craft that keeps the listening audience intrigued. I agree with Ratliff in the fact that it involves slight or dramatic variations of a repeating tune, rhythm, or beat. It involves suspense and emotional provocation. Otherwise repeating the same pattern, through and through can be boring and predictable. An example that embodies this idea is the song Ratliff used by James Brown, "Ain't it Funky Now". The song has steady repetition in almost element of its production, down to the lyrics. However, key changes create suspense and make the listening experience not entirely predictable.

One of my favorite songs, "Message In a Bottle" By Ty Dolla Sign is an example of this too with few verses and a very repetitive melody and rhythm. Artists like him built they're sound off of artists like James Brown who were Grand Masters in the art.
