I believe that many people would want this book banished because it makes us question our lifes and may motivate younger people to go against traditional values or rules, or even the authority which, in this case, is their parents. Beside it, the book talks about a few themes way too dark for kids to read, such as euthanize infants, totalitarism, war and death, extreme control of everything, etc.

Questions 1 - During the first Ceremony, the process of Naming is explained. How does it happen? How are the names chosen? And what is a “replacement child”?

The child's name are chosen by the comittee of elders and they make this choice based on the book of 'Approved names' and the main characteristics of each child so it fits them. Once they all reach one year old, its when the 'One year ceremony' happens, where the nurturers bring each children to the stage, the chief elder pronounces the kid's name, all the community repeats it, and then the family go to the stage receave their new member.

Questions 2 - What Assignments are mentioned during the Ceremony of Twelve? What aspects called your attention? What happens when it’s time to announce Jonas’ Assignment?

During the Ceremony of Twelve, the mentioned Assignments are:

Birthmother
Caretaker of the Old
Instructor of Threes
Recreational Director
Doctor
Laborer
Fish Hatchery Attendant

What caught my attention was that, even though some Assignments are clearly looked down upon (like Birthmother), the kids still accept them happily and without resistance. It also surprised me that no one has any real choice in life — they don’t get to choose their Assignments, their spouses, or even their own children. Everything is decided by the Committee of Elders.

During the Ceremony, Jonas’s number is skipped, which causes confusion. Later, the Chief Elder explains that Jonas was not simply assigned a role like the others, he was selected for a rare and important position: the Receiver of Memory. This role is highly honored, but also painful and full of responsibility, as it requires bearing all the past memories of the world.

Questions 5 - In your opinion, why is there only one “Receiver of memory”? And what happens during Jonas’ first day in this Assignment? Describe the setting, the emotions, and anything else you consider of relevance.

I think theres only one receiver of memory because they want the less people possible to suffer with the memories and they need all the knowledge acumulated in one place so theres no mistakes or misunderstandings.

On Jonas First day, he goes to a very different house that is full of books, there, he meets 'The giver', an old man that explains the job to him, he tells to the boy that he will guive him all the antecessors memories, which will be very painfull or good, then he gave him his first memory, a sledding down a snowy hill, where he experiences the snow, the speed and good feelings for the first time, after this, jonas starts to question the world around him and look for changes.

Questions 4 - What are Jonas’ instructions after receiving his Assignment? Do they change his perception about the Community? Explain.

The instructions he receives are:

Go immediatly at the end of school hours each day to the Annex entrace behind the House of the Old and present yourself to the attendant;
Go immediatly to your dwelling at the conclusion of Training Hours each day.
From this moment you are exempted from rules governing rudeness. You may ask any questions of any citizen and you will reaceive answers.
Do not discuss your training with any other member of the community, including parents and elders.
From this moment you are prohibited from dream-telling.
Except for illnes or injury unrelated to your training do not apply for any medications.
You may lie.

The last instruction make jonas question evertything he believed in his community, he was always told that lies were not alowed, and now the instructions are telling him to lie, he questions if everyone receives this instruction, from this moment on, he started to see all the controlling and the lies from the community.

Questions 3 - What are the necessary qualities to become a “Receiver of memory”? Why are they a necessity? And, in your opinion, what does this Assignment entails?

According to the chief elder, to become a receiver of memory the kid must be intellingent, honest and trustworthy, brave, learn, and have the capacity of 'seeing beyond' (intelligence, integrity, courage, wisdom and see beyond).

These qualities are necessary for the receaver to be able to hold all the memories, emotions, suffering and remain mentally stable enough to give advices do the elders and help them to make better choices.

In my opinion, this assignment makes jonas have to carry all the suffering and pain from the whole history in his back, entirelly alone, never understood or comprehended because he is not allowed to share these memories.
