To conduct a proper literature review, it is critical that teachers, students, administrators, or anyone involved in the process follow clear guidelines to achieve the best possible outcome. Some of the most important purposes of a literature review are the following:

To find out what works and what doesn't in previous research

This is the essential first step in approaching literature review effectively. It is crucial to have the ability to identify what should be included in our research, as this will help us to structure it clearly and coherently. Including only the most relevant and functional allows us to avoid inconsistencies, which contributes to generating greater clarity in the research approach. In addition, by knowing what has worked in previous studies, we can incorporate those methodologies and theories that have proven to be effective, optimizing our own work and avoiding past mistakes.

To research a topic, problem, or question of professional and/or personal interest

Literature review also helps us focus on a specific topic, research problem, or particular question. This selection process is vital because it allows us to accurately identify the search we must carry out and the objectives we wish to achieve in our research. By establishing a focused approach, we can cover what is really important within the topic at hand, which helps clarify the expectations and directions that the research will take.

To identify an additional area of study

This purpose is key because it allows us to identify in greater depth the focus of our research. That is, by reviewing what has been previously researched, we can discover areas within our field or discipline that have not yet been fully explored. This gives us the opportunity to generate new approaches, collect fresh data and obtain results that can be truly innovative. In addition, this ensures that our research contributes significantly to the development of our area of study, filling knowledge gaps.

To examine or analyze research methodology

It is essential to examine or analyze the methodology of previous research to have clarity on how it has been carried out and what methods have been used. This analysis provides us with a deep understanding of the dynamics of research and helps us maintain objectivity. By reviewing the methodologies used, we can also ensure that our own research follows a clear path and is based on sound practices that favor the validity and reliability of the results obtained.

1 This process involves using the review to identify and understand what approaches, interventions or methods have been effective in research already conducted. This allows good practice to build on existing knowledge.

2 address a topic, problem or theme of personal or professional interest. Here, emphasis is placed on using the literature review to explore or learn more about a particular topic that is more important for professional practice or that is of greater personal interest, which allows the research problem to be contextualized within the corresponding line of study.

3 to point out an area of further study. A literature review may reveal gaps in existing knowledge, suggesting areas in need of further research, which may involve identifying understudied aspects to benefit further research.

4 Provide a justification or background for the study. Conducting a literature review allows you to gather relevant information to support the importance and need for conducting a specific study based on prior knowledge and understanding of the environment in which the research is being conducted.

5 Study or analyze the research methodology. This stage involves examining how other past research has been carried out in the same research area with their methods or approaches used and techniques employed to know how to use those lessons learned in new studies.

With the literature review I can say that there are some stages to determine the focus of the bibliographic search with the selection of a special topic, deciding what to include and what to exclude from the review, that is, allusive and important information on the topic to be investigated, translating the topic into key terms for said search.

Once the process of selecting relevant information is done, the researcher proceeds to search in relevant bibliographic databases, which leads to exploring the existing literature to collect information relevant to the research topic. Finally, the studies found are analyzed, the studies found are organized and the literature review is written in a coherent and meaningful way so that through this process the researcher has a better understanding of the state of the art.
