- To help with spoken words and phonics we will focus on Orton Gillingham and Reading Mastery twice a day.

-Students will use technology apps such as Smarty Ants and Tiggly to help reinforce hearing and seeing the letter with the sound. 

-We will help students with retelling a story, author, illustrator, answering questions about a story through daily Guided Reading groups and whole group instruction. 

-The students will use the Seesaw app to read and retell books we have read in guided groups. 

-Second grade will address low TRC scores in Reading 3D through shared writing, modeling written responses, completing written responses in guided reading groups, and requiring nightly reading responses for homework.

-Based on data from last year’s first graders, a class reduction position has been added in second grade to lower class sizes.

-A Title I tutor and a teacher assistant will each work with small groups of students, with emphasis being placed on bubble students (within 1-4 questions of proficiency in DE reading).

-Smarty Ants will be used to strengthen phonics skills.

-Eleven second graders are now using Achieve 3000 instead of participating in their regular DI instruction.  More students will transition into this group as data indicates their readiness.   

-Continue phonics instruction. 

-Focus on text features using non-fiction text during guided reading. 

-Instruct on character analysis focusing on why the character responds in different ways. 

-As a grade level we will focus on comparing two similar texts using questions related to the 4th grade skills (theme, main idea etc.) utilizing ReadWorks, CPalms and BetterLesson.-

-Continue with PBL’s in Science and Social Studies to incorporate and apply reading and math skills. 

-Our instruction will put more focus on asking higher order thinking questions that are purposeful with two similar answer choices. 

-We will give pre-assessments before teaching each math lesson to see where each student needs to start as well as what they already know. As well as a post assessment after teaching the new concept. 

-We will teach and reteach math subjects whole group and reinforce the needs of each student in guided math.

-Students will be able to reinforce math skills through a variety of manipulative activities, interactive technology apps, guided teacher and assistant stations.

-Students will use Moby Max and Tiggly apps when in their technology station to help with instruction on their level. 

-Many of our second graders are struggling with basic number sense, so teachers will continue to work on building this important foundation.

-Teachers will work with small groups of students to diagnose and address deficiencies.

-Moby Max practice will allow students to work on math skills on their own level.

-Teachers will conference individually with students about their own data.

Each classroom will display a data wall for reading and math data.

-Focusing on the process of solving the problem, not finding the solution. 

-Begin using XtraMath. 

-Utilize Spiral Review based on 5th grade’s success. 

-Directly instruct the use of calculators, (fractions). 

-Integrate the use of the calculator. 

-Continue focusing on identifying keywords in a problem. 

-Continue to spiral review taught concepts. 

-Present students with more application questions.

-Continue to focus on vocabulary. 

-Continue using and incorporating more components from Discovery Ed Techbook.
