Websites like Facebook, Twitter and snapchat have all changed how communicate, network and share information. Social media is a great form of networking a as you can pretty much get in contact with anyone from anywhere in the world. Now with the technology we have we can also work with anyone from around the world too, you could write and record songs from your bedroom and send it to people from America to get them to hear it or work on it if you wanted. Social media is not only good for personal use but it's also very important for all types of business' too. Social media has also became very important for musicians because of their career and brands. Ways that social media can help artists are:
  • Promotion - Nowadays you don't see much in person campaigning happening, for example ten years ago when a band was releasing a new album they would have personally gone to a music shop such as HMV and and sign copies of the physical albums for fans who went out and actually bought the music. Nowadays the campaigning is all social media posts and promotional videos which can also reach a lot more people than what the signings would. 
  • Fan Interaction - Social media has now also broken down walls between the artist and fans. Now with social media fans can get in touch their favourite artists in seconds just using their phones. Social media gives there artist control over what their want to say and how they can say it with things such as live show, new albums and merchandise. 
There are also downsides of social media for musicians also, such as illegal file sharing. Now with the internet to so easy find illegal music files for free. A lot of people my age that I know don't but music anymore, they all rip music off of a free app that downloads videos from youtube. This is very damaging for artists as they get no profit from their work. There are still so many people these days that believe music isn't a real career path, if you aren't a famous musician then you aren't a musician at all. These are the kind of people that believe a right to your music for free which isn't the case, and even with really famous established artists their mindset is well these people are already rich, they don't need my money which can be really damaging for the industry.

Shows like this include the X Factor, the Voice and Britain's Got Talent. The biggest UK TV talent show is the X Factor, this show specifically searches for singers. The X Factor is a competition and the winner goes on to win a £1 million recording contract with record label Syco Music. Winners of the show have included Leona Lewis and Little Mix, although not winning the show the most successful contestants to have come out of the show are the boyband One Direction. TV shows like these always get mixed reviews on whether they're good for the industry or not, they can be seen a lot like major labels in the sense that the artists don't get any creative control on what they release and how they present themselves. Youtube has become one of the most popular websites with users watching around 6 billion hours of video every month. Youtube is used for lot of different content such as music videos, vlogs and covers to name a few. Youtube is a great way for a band to get started by posting original songs or videos.  A lot of record labels or companies have people employed just to seek out new talent on social media and YouTube specifically. If you have the right promotion and the right tools you can start a career just from uploading YouTube videos, some of today's biggest stars got their start from uploading videos to YouTube such as Justin Bieber and Tori Kelly.
