2. WHAT I LEARNED IN THE MODULE ABOUT SCULPTURE AS A FINE ART:

In the module, I learned a lot of things about the form of sculpture as a fine art. First, I learned that sculpture can be defined as “the art of expressing ideas, feelings or characteristics by the chosen and obvious implication of living forms”. Sculpture, through its form, can be used to educate and perpetuate among people that there is a higher beauty that are concrete forms which are manifestations of the spirit.

Also, I learned that the two principal elements of sculpture are mass - the space occupying bulk contained within its surface, and space - the area in which the sculpture occupies. In addition to the principal elements, there are also 6 other important elements of sculpture. These are line, color, texture, value, and shape.

I also learned through the reading of Gilson’s (Statuary) Forms and Substances in the Arts that a sculpture’s first characteristic is to appear as a solid and it should constitute space. Another characteristic of sculpture is that not only should it constitute space, but it is also bound by time. This means that sculpture or statues require time in order to be appreciated and fully understood.

Besides these, I learned that sculpture has three different forms wherein beauty is displayed and these are sculpture’s form and beauty in classical sculpture, Renaissance sculpture, baroque sculpture, and in modern sculpture. Examples of these are Greek and Roman sculptures for classical sculpture, Michelangelo’s Pieta for Renaissance sculpture, Ecstasy of St. Theresa for Baroque sculpture, and Isamu Noguchi’s water stone for modern sculpture. The forms of these three types of sculpture are different, but what they all have is common is that they all constitute space, there is motion present in the sculptures, and there is mass that highlights the bulk that the sculptures occupy in space.

1. WHAT I KNEW ABOUT SCULPTURE BEFORE TAKING THE MODULE:

Before taking the module, I already had an idea about sculptures through statues. I knew that statues were a form of statues and that they were created by artists called sculptors.

Besides these, I knew through observation that sculpture is 3-dimensional and is sculpted through various types of medium such as wood, stone, metal, etc.

3. WHAT ELSE I WOULD LIKE TO LEARN ABOUT SCULPTURE AS A FINE ART:

After taking the module, I still want to know how sculpture, as a fine art, can be a practical means of not just expressing ideas, but how it can also be used as a means to propel advocacies that promote society's well-being.

Besides this, since fine art is defined as "an activity that requires great skill", I want to what it actually takes to be skillful in creating sculptures; the process and techniques that are used.
