By Elijah Heinrichs
Birth/Death - Drake was born around 1540 and died in 1596
Where was he born - Drake was born in tavistock, Devon as the eldest of 12 sons
What country did he explore for - Drake explored for England. Queen Elizabeth paid him to circumnavigate the world
What years did he explore - Drake started as a slave trader in the 1560's. During 1563 - 1568 Drake made 3 expeditions with the last one ending in Spanish warships almost killing him. Drake barely survived by swimming away. His first raid was in 1572. From 1577 - 1580 Drake circumnavigated the world.
What was his purpose for sailing - Drake not only explored for profit but for the respect of the queen. On his return from circumnavigating the world Drake was rewarded knighthood, lots of treasure, and a portrait of the queen
What did he discover - Drake's voyage discovered that Tierra del Fuego, the land south of the Magellan Strait, was not part of a southern continent as had been believed, but a group of islands.
Drake also sailed further north along the coast of the Americas than any other European had before. On the way, he landed in what is now California, naming it Nova Albion
Three facts - In England Drake was known as a hero but to Spain he was a pirate. - Drake's ship (renamed the golden hind) as the only ship to fully circumnavigate the world and return out of the 5 ships that took part. - After a huge plunder Drake's crew had to bury treasure on a beach since they were not able to take it all. (this directly lead into the stereotype of pirates burying treasure)
